Bill O'Brien to interview with Texans

It appears Penn State coach Bill O'Brien is considering a return to the NFL.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, O'Brien is one of the top candidates for the Houston Texans coaching job, and both sides have agreed to conduct an interview following Christmas. There is no date on when the agreed upon meeting will take place.

O'Brien took over at Penn State before the 2012 season and before the NCAA announced penalties against the school following the Jerry Sandusky scandal. He had spent the previous five seasons on the New England Patriots coaching staff.

Should O'Brien ultimately decide to leave Penn State and return to the NFL, he won't come cheap. Aside from the salary O'Brien would receive his current contract at Penn State includes a buyout of $6.5 million.

And while a buyout of that size would no doubt keep other colleges from sniffing around O'Brien, an NFL team wouldn't have nearly as much trouble paying it.

College coaches also maintain authority in the program. Just look at what is rumored to be going on in Washington with some saying RGIII is above Shanahan. A lot of teams have something similar to that going on. If you have a great job like Penn State, with that authority, why give it up?

1st half is true....2nd half, not so much. McNair rides with his coaches to the point of fault and many want to believe it will be different this time but it won't.

Not in State College he's not, where they are counting the days until enough time passes to put his statues back up.

That has zero to do with BOB anyway and actually works to his advantage as he can be seen as a savior who revived things.

Also, some of you are nuts if you think the Houston Texas is a better job than Penn St. The only reason to make this move would be if he's dead set on being an NFL coach. Otherwise, this is a job you bypass until a better offer comes along that you can't refuse.

Penn State isn't that great of a job, think you are overselling it a bit. Don't think Houston is a good situation for him and he'd be better served to wait, but BOB will upgrade at some point. Most likely in the NFL, that seems to be the direction he's headed but there are a lot of jobs on the college level even that would represent an upgrade.
