Titans hire Whisenhunt as new head coach

Just one day after San Diego was eliminated from the playoffs, Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt has decided to move on. Whisenhunt has accepted an offer to become the Tennessee Titans next coach, the team announced on Monday.

Whisenhunt interviewed with the team on Friday and was believed to be a favorite for both the Titans job and the vacant Detroit Lions job. Whisenhunt replaces Mike Munchak, who was fired by the Titans on Jan. 4.

Besides Whisenhunt, the Titans also interviewed Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell and Jay Gruden (who took the Redskins head-coaching job).

The job in Tennessee will mark Whisenhunt's second stint as a head coach. The 51-year-old served as Arizona's coach for six seasons and led the Cardinals to the franchise's first and only Super Bowl appearance in only his second-year with the team.

The Cardinals fired Whisenhunt after the team went 5-11 in 2012, but he wasn't unemployed for long. Whisenhunt was one of the first hires made by first-year Chargers coach Mike McCoy in January 2013.

In San Diego, Whisenhunt took an offense that ranked 31st in the league in 2012 and turned it into NFL's fifth-ranked unit. After only averaging just over 297 yards per game in 2012, the San Diego offense upped that output to 393.3 yards per game under Whisenhunt's guidance.

One of the first things Whisenhunt's going to have to do in Tennessee is decide who his quarterback is. The Titans spent the eighth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft on Jake Locker and Whisenhunt will have to decide if that's who he wants to move forward with.

Whisenhunt will also have to deal with running back Chris Johnson, who said last week that if Tennessee's not going to use him the way he's suppose to be used, then they should just let him move on.

Besides coaching with the Chargers and Cardinals, Whisenhunt has also spent time coaching with the Ravens, Browns, Jets and Steelers. Whisenhunt spent six years with the Steelers, including three seasons as the team's offensive coordinator. Under Whisenhunt's guidance, the Steelers made it to two AFC title games and won Super Bowl XL.

Whisenhunt to the Lions was thought to be all but certain, but great job by the Titans to beat them out for Whisenhunt. Definitely a good hire for them.

Sigh, Detroit's other options were said to be Mike Munchak (ugh), Jim Caldwell (ugh), and Gary Kubiak (ugh). Looks like more years of shit for Detroit.

Very pleased with the hire. Whisenhunt is a fantastic offensive mind that the organization has lacked for quite some time, and he has no previous ties to the Titans/Oilers.

Hopefully he can bring back Gregg Williams or snag someone like Wade Phillips to be his defensive coordinator.

Can't believe he took Tennessee over Detroit. With the right coach and the right adjustments, Detroit could be in the Super Bowl next year. Bill Belichick couldn't take that Titans team to the Super Bowl next year.

In regards to Detroit, hearing that Dan Quinn (Seattle's DC) is looking like a possibility. The Lions, in my opinion, need a good offensive minded coach to help Stafford along, but I would be much more excited with Quinn than any of the remaining candidates. If only the Lions had good players on the boundaries. Their secondary was hot trash most of the time.

The Lions need two things in a new head coach - discipline and someone who can fix Matthew Stafford. Stafford has all the tools, just needs some coaching. The Lions have it all talent-wise, save for a playoff secondary, but need to cut out the goofy undisciplined crap that may have been fine in the 70s if you were wearing silver and black, but doesn't work now. The right coach gets this team to 12 wins easily in 2014.

Yep, and I think that's why Lions fans are pretty disappointed in losing out on Whisenhunt because he's both of those. I'm so sick of seeing stupid plays by everyone on the team, they need a disciplinarian who will help cut down on dumb penalties, but also help Stafford make better decisions and tweak his throwing motion a little bit. But, mostly the dumb penalties. It needs to stop.

Detroit would be wise to interview Mike Zimmer right now. First, it would set the Vikings back in their search, as he's one of their top candidates, if not the top one. Zimmer is a defensive-minded coach, but that's where the Lions need the most help. I know that people are saying Stafford needs help, but with Stafford, Johnson and Bush, a blind person could call plays and still do a decent job. Fixing that defense should be a top priority.

I'd also take a look at Hue Jackson if they want an offensive guy. He would certainly be a better coach than Caldwell at this point. I'm definitely a fan of Jackson getting an opportunity but the Bengals may not want to risk losing three coaches.
