Tragic that somebody is killed over a little money and possibly some weed
JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - An Arkansas State University football player was shot and killed Wednesday night at his home in Jackson, TN, according to the Jackson Police Department.
Police said Markel Owens, 21 of Jackson was pronounced dead at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Police said his mother was also shot.
Owens was a redshirt senior defensive linemen for Arkansas State. He was about to enter another year with the Red Wolves.
According to Twitter account @RedWolvesFBall:
"Today is a tough day for the Red Wolves family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Markel Owens' family and friends at this difficult time."

Police said another man, Johnny Shivers, 36 was shot and killed during the home invasion robbery.
According to police, two masked men stormed into Owens' home behind Shivers. According to police, the two men demanded money from Shivers.
Shivers and Owens were shot while fighting off both suspects.
Owens' mother was treated and released from a hospital.
Investigators said both suspects got away with a large amount of money. Marijuana was also discovered, a police report stated.
Jackson Police have not released a motive for the robbery, but believe the suspects knew about the drugs and money.
Owens played in 11 games for the Red Wolves last season, helping Arkansas State (8-5) to at least a share of its third straight Sun Belt Conference title and a second straight win in the GoDaddy Bowl.
