top 5 imo. you had some big time statistical dees like the 85 bears and the 70ies steelers, 86 giants or the 2000 ravens...many others too. But todays NFL with the rules and being geared to favor the pass, and this dee was able to dismantle the greatest regular season QB of all time and their record setting offense. they did it last year and all this year too. very impressive dee

        Very difficult question.

Statistically, it doesn't rank in the Top 10...its not even really close, really.

But the game has changed a lot since the last truly great NFL defense (2000 Ravens)...even since the last major rule change (2004), Seattle's stats just don't stack up as an All-Time Great. But in a one season bubble...they led the league in ever major category including what will be considered historically great pass defense in a league where the pass has become flag football-esque.

This question will be sorted out with historical context, IMO. Very difficult to answer right now. Historically, on par with Orange Crush, I guess you'd say?

          1. 85 Bears
          2. 00 Ravens
          3. 13 Seahawks

That being said, the Seahawks D had the strongest opponent by far (and destroyed them).

I'm sure you could make an argument for those 70s Steelers teams and the early 90s Cowboys as well. Frankly, ranking this is very hard. I remain steadfast in my belief the 85 Bears are the best D of all-time and I honestly believe the overall team is the best too.

Forgot all about that Tampa D, mostly because the Bucs went to shit right after that Super Bowl. But that was a great defense.

I chose to ignore Tampa Bay because as a Philadelphia Eagles' fan, it is my job to officially to hate you ... especially since I was in Veterans Stadium in 2002.

                    Right now, probably top five.

If they can keep it up though I move them to the top spot because of staying power.

might have to give them a tad more credit..theyve finished the regular season at number 1 defensively 2 years in a row

Harder to defend the pass....but you never have to worry about the run which those previous defenses demolished at times.
I always default to scheme and talent level.
Scheme is nothing unique , talent level historically is too early to tell. Arguably the best Secondary of any all time as a unit for sure.
They remind me of the 92 Dallas defense where for there time they were a dominant unit and extremely young and dominated with insane depth everywhere. Outside of Haley there wasn't a guy you would call dominant though.
I mean are any of these Hawks playing at a HOF level ? Are we going to see a Sapp, Lewis , Singletary, Joe Greene etc come out of this group ?
No way I put them with Bears / Bucs/Steelers / Ravens.
Somewhere near the Cowboys in the 90s and Giants of the late 80s. But I'm not sure they're as good as them either. I'm not sure how much of that is them not being allowed to be though.
Best reason to have a license.

They're not trying to play as individual HOFers though. They're playing really sound team defense, which is their goal.

A perfect example is the Sherman tip from the NFC Championship game. Sherman could've just tipped the ball down and taken the PD? But instead he decided to tip the ball up because he saw his teammate coming, and knew it would benefit his team even though he wouldn't show up on the stat sheet.

Of course, Sherman went on to take all the spotlight and credit, but at the time it happened, it was incredible team defense.

The Seahawks played great, but the broncos played horrible.

The safety, pick 6, and kick return td made these two teams look more uneven then they actually are. Still, my prior statement that they would evenly split in a 10 game series is wrong, probably more like a 7-3 series favoring the Seahawks.

It's even more impressive when you remember that the Seahawks played without Browner and Irvin for most of the year.

Clearly the best team in the NFL this year.

It's a testament to the depth that defense has. The Broncos made them look supernatural, but it still is a top-tier defense for the Seahawks.
