The first year of the Alex Smith era in Kansas City was a rousing success, even if it ended with the Chiefs losing a gut-punch of a playoff game to the Colts.
It shouldn't be a big surprise, then, that the Chiefs and Smith's camp are discussing a contract negotiation. Smith confirmed as much to the Kansas City Star on Monday, while pointing out that he doesn't worry about contract issues.
"My agent handles all of that, and that's why you hire that guy to take care of that, so you can focus on football, said Smith, who has one year remaining on his contract. It's really not my place. I have a contract for this year."
Smith has a single year left on his contract that will pay him $7.5 million in 2014. He'd become a free agent in 2015 without a new deal, but Smith isn't sweating the future.
"I've played long enough, going into year 10 now, it's all year-to-year in my mind anyway at this point, Smith said. "You've got to continually prove yourself. I don't think it changes anything as far as my mindset or approach to the game."
How has Smith been playing in the NFL for 10 years? (That's more depressing than the time the Blind Melon bumblebee girl turned 30.)
But there's not much to worry about really. Andy Reid likes Smith, who will turn 30 in early May. The Chiefs gave up two second-round picks to the 49ers for the former No. 1 overall pick and surely that wasn't with the intent of getting two years of production.
