Oneida Nation: NFL should punish Snyder as NBA did Sterling

The NBA on Tuesday came down hard on Clippers owner Donald Sterling, banning him for life from the league and fining him $2.5 million for the racial comments he made.

On Tuesday evening, the Oneida Nation, which clearly is on a mission to force Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to change the nickname of his team, responded with applause for the NBA and with some advice for the NFL.

Said the Oneida Nation in a statement:

“By banning Clippers owner Donald Sterling, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and other NBA team owners have taken a courageous stand against racism in professional sports, acknowledging that professional leagues must not be a platform to promote bigotry. In taking such appropriate disciplinary action, the NBA has shown other leagues, including the NFL, that they have a moral responsibility to take disciplinary action against people like Washington owner Dan Snyder, who also continues to proudly promote bigotry by using a dictionary-defined racial slur as his team's name.”

For now, that's not happening, though the temperature seemingly continues to climb on Snyder to acquiesce to the wishes of anybody who is offended by Washington's choice of nickname. But last week, Snyder had this to say.

"We understand the issues out there, and we're not an issue," Snyder said. "The real issues are real-life issues, real-life needs, and I think it's time that people focus on reality."

In the NBA's eyes, Sterling clearly was an issue. For now, though, the NFL seems to agree with Snyder.
