Why are college athletes not unionized?

Nobody has, yet, put forth a cogent argument as to why players shouldn't be allowed to market their image.



All I'm asking is for a cogent explanation why allowing athletes to market their image would be damaging to the sport of college football. That's all. It's not that much. Someone here should be able to provide it.

Did you miss the part about Title IX?

Besides that:
1) They are student athletes, and are thus resigned to honor their scholarship requirements.
---It is no different then those on academic scholarships maintaining a 3.0 (whatever it is), members of the national honor soceity staying out of legal trouble and any other selected group.

2) No student-athlete should get priveledge over other student athletes. Are athletes at Michigan more important than those at Grand Valley State? Are football players more important than Track?
---If the point is to make things fair, how is one student athletes time more important than any others? You don't think the other sports have to put in hours of practice time?

3) Should only a handful of players on each team get the money? Since Vince Young practically won that National Championship by himself should he be the only person to get any money. What about his backup who did just as much off the field as Young did to prepare the team.
---How is his backup any different then a track athlete? His backup didn't earn the university a dime, Vince Young won that championship.


EDIT to add:

So if athletes don't live up to the hype, I assume they should get their schollies pulled as well? I mean, if its a business they shouldn't waste time on the busts.
