People claiming they were stiffed on a tip via social media is rivaling "stranded traveler needs a money transfer" in the Hall of Fame of hoax cliches, but nobody was kidding about Warren Sapp stiffing a waitress on a tip Tuesday.

Sapp, a legendary defensive tackle with the Buccaneers and Raiders who also is legendary for being ornery at times, apparently went to a sports bar to watch the U.S. soccer team play its World Cup match. He and the other person he was with had a nice meal, with an appetizer, wings, a reuben sandwich, some Heinekens and a pizza. The bill came to $69.39. No big deal.

But then the waitress didn't get a tip, and Sapp made sure the waitress knew he didn't just somehow forget it. The receipt ended up with ESPN.com's Darren Rovell.

The message on the receipt was "Boys don't tip!" which seems odd. And the chances of this being a fake seemed reasonably high, until Sapp himself shot back on Twitter about it.

Well, there you have it. Did the waitress deserve to get stiffed? Was Sapp being insufferable? Don't know, wasn't there. We'll let you make your own judgments on that one.

Depends. As a server you have to know your audience, some people get offended by that stuff... Obviously he is one of them.

Honestly doesn't surprise me one bit. Just recently, Sapp has filed for bankruptcy and nearly lost his job at NFL Network for saying Jeremy Shockey was a "snitch" in the Saints bounty investigation. Seems like the kind of guy who would have horror stories to me.

I always tip ~20% because I'm a nice person and not the type of jackass like Warren Sapp to find any minuscule reason to justify not giving a tip.

It is a great scam though to have a system setup where people that work in restaurants can be underpaid by their employers and then turn around and blame the customer.

When I worked at iHop the waiters made $2.13 an hour. People relied on tips. If no one gave tips they'd walk away with <20$ for the day. While I hate the tip reliant system I can empathize with these people and chose to give a tip. Warren Sapp didn't leave without giving a tip because she called him boy, he didn't tip because he's a cheap fuck.

In England a tip is automatically added on. Waiters in England love Americans because they'll tip twice.

I always tip 15% (or more) unless the waiter/waitress is a complete jackass. In my province, they make below minimum wage and depend on the tips for their living. While drinking at a bar, if the service is good, always 20% or more.

I've dined in other countries where tipping is not customary and the service was horrible at every single restaurant. Need another beer? Good luck, because the waitress ain't coming back, and she will scoff at you for bothering her when you do see her.

Thats because you are an ugly American, it has nothing to do with tipping not being customary. If you were a hot-looking Canadian (like Dave), the waitress would be sucking you off in the back room.

Sapp found the waitress to be rude, so he didn't tip. Thats his choice. Don't know who Darren Rovell is, but the fact that ESPN is paying him to report stuff like this is whats pathetic, IMO.

The restaurant/bar could raise the cost of food/drinks 50% to cover the cost of going to an true hourly wage. Most folks would go apeshit over that. A 15-18% tip is expected for average service. Show up and tip like an asshole a few times and see what type of service you get... Lucky if they don't wipe your food on the floor before they serve it to you.
