Manziel ahead of Hoyer for Browns starting QB

That didn't take long. Hours after Johnny Manziel made his NFL debut, the Browns rookie has moved into the lead for the starting job ahead of Brian Hoyer, a team source told ESPN's Bob Holtzman.

The veteran Hoyer was the starter heading into training camp, and first-year coach Mike Pettine gave Hoyer the nod over Manziel in Saturday's preseason game against the Lions. And while Hoyer did nothing to lose the job, Manziel made a good case for why he deserves more playing time.

As we wrote Saturay night, Hoyer's steady-as-she-goes effort won't be enough. Even though Manziel went three-and-out in his first series, in subsequent series he showed glimpses of what made him such a dynamo at Texas A&M.

Put another way: With Hoyer it's "what you see is what you get." Meanwhile, we have no idea just how good Manziel will be. For a team coming off a 4-12 season and perpetually in search of a franchise quarterback, the decision seems pretty straightforward, even if Pettine hasn't come out and said it.

There's a good chance Manziel starts against the Redskins on Aug. 18, and if he shows improvement from his solid outing in Detroit -- no matter how well Hoyer plays -- we'd be hard-pressed to come up with a scenario in which Pettine, who has said he wants to name a starter before Week 3, doesn't give Johnny Football the job.

Maybe Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau and his half-century of NFL experience is right to expect to see Manziel when the two teams meet in the regular-season opener on Sept. 7.

That went quicker than I expected, I was thinking it would take Manziel at least two seasons. Guess there wasn't much behind Hoyer being the starter to begin with, just a way to get Manziel to show what his work ethic was like.

It's pretty short-sighted thinking to put Manziel ahead of Hoyer based on one exhibition game ... but that offence is clearly a better fit for Manziel than Hoyer.

Whoever they have is gonna stink without receivers on the outside. Stupid decision to throw Manziel to the wolves.

You still have Jordan Cameron, who is a great player for Manziel to have as a safety valve. Also, with the way the NFL is now, it's not really throwing a rookie QB to the wolves anymore with how the rules are slanted to help out the quarterback.

Cameron immediately becomes option 1 this year and in bracket coverage.

Our safety valve becomes the QB Draw. Best case scenario by seasons end the starters are Austin and Johnson on the outside with Hawkins and Benjamin working the slot.

            Certainly not intimidating.

The best things I can take from preseason game 1: West could be a beast. Mingo and Armonty Bryant were unblockable on 3rd down versus the Lions starting offensive line.

No way I see them having a franchise QB (in the city's mind) on the bench. Right or wrong, teams are ready to throw the "savior", hoping he can save people's jobs. The coach has to know that he doesn't have long to make the team look better than it has in the past and with everyone loving JF in Cle, he's going to sink/swim with him. Unless #2 shows he can't read defenses for shit, I don't see how they can let him ride the pine. If he goes in and flops, the city will chalk it up as another failure at QB. Right now his popularity and jersey sales makes it highly doubtful he doesn't start sooner than later. They could start the season 0-5 (I'm thinking 2-3 at worst..being nice) and the coach would have pitch forks greet him everyday to put Johnny in the game. I'll cheer for the Browns except for whenever they play the Bears.

edit: looking forward to see him go against 1st team in a vanilla defense....baby steps.

They signed Sexy Rexy...can't be good for Hoyer. Either they look to shop him around or Rex doesn't even make 53 man roster.
