    Week 1 College Football

I think its a little lame that the CFB season kicks off with a terrible game. I liked it when they had the "Kickoff Classic" or something like that (and perhaps they still have it?), with the first game being a stand-alone game of two top teams. I remember one year it was Penn State and USC, with a motivated Curtis Enis tearing apart a supposed tough USC defense. Georgia Southern probably won't remain in the memory banks.

I'm fine with multiple SHOWDOWNS, I just think its dumb to have that type of elite opening game and then turn around and allow the Sun Belt or MAC open the season on the preceding Thursday night.

My favorite series in CFB history was when Michigan would play Notre Dame for their opener with Schembechler facing Holtz. That was a great way to start the year.

Glad to see the anunal S. Carolina pipe dream go up in smoke early. It was like watching a mediocre Big10 team trying to cope with a team that has a good spread offense. It is strange to me that Spurrier has never recaptured his mojo since going to the NFL...not like he's been bad, but his offenses are nothing like the ones he had at Florida. I thought Texas A&M would win, but as you said, I did not expect TAMU to have 500 yards of offense midway through the 3rd Q.

UL Monroe game was like a throwback to Teddy Roosevelt football, where the only things that happen are punts, blocked punts, and defensive TDs. Wake's OL was nonexistent. Monroe lost all of their good players from last season and still managed to beat Wake.

I thought Ole Miss looked decent enough in their win over Boise. It helps to have an experienced QB who can pass.

I think the another Big Surprise is Vandy Losing to the Temple Owls 37-7, I like Derek Mason too I did not think his Debut would go like this.

Clemson out-Clemsoned Georgia in their game, going completely silent in the 2nd half on offense. First half was great, second half was all Georgia. Don't know if Gurley will do anything in the NFL...he runs too upright and takes a lot of big hits...maybe he'll be like Darren McFadden in the NFL (?), but he's fun to watch in college. Saw that Cliff Stoudt's kid is the Clemson QB...Cliff started for one year with the Steelers (1983), the Steelers somehow made the playoffs despite having Stoudt as their QB which led to this exchange between SI's Paul Zimmerman and Steeler coach Chuck Noll...

Zimmerman: You realize you have the worst QB in the league?
            Noll: Yeah.

Would like to re-watch the LSU-Wisconsin game, because LSU looked dead in the water then had a huge turnaround. Trotter of Wisconsin looked like Dick Butkus in the 1st half...shooting gaps and single-handedly stopping the LSU running attack. Seemed like LSU figured something out at halftime, because they moved the ball well in the 2nd half. A killer loss for Wisconsin, because they were in control much of the game.

UGA and South Carolina is going to be telling for UGA this year, going to be a great matchup to watch and a key game early in the season. I definitely think if any year is the year for UGA, this is it. The coaches are really excited for what they have this year, and were already planning on their run being this season.

Navy did well against Ohio State all things considered, but I didn't think they had a true shot to win that game. They had a great offensive showing against the Buckeyes, which is promising for this season. They should easily win out until the Air Force game, which is on the road this year.

That sounds like every year under Richt.

I can agree as a fan, but I also have family on the coaching staff and that is what they were hoping for before last season, to have a real push for 2014.

Southern Miss got thumped so badly by MS State that it sapped my desire to watch additional games over the weekend. I'll be going to the BYU-Texas game this weekend. It will be interesting to see how the Longhorns respond with Tyron Swoopes under center after their starting QB David Ash suffered a concussion sometime during the game on Saturday night. Ash missed 10 games last season due to concussion issues so it would really be good for Texas if Swoopes can prove to be a productive and more durable alternative.

Well, the rest of their division looks like trash, so its set up for UGA to win. Unfortunately, the S.Carolina game seems like the kind of game UGA has lost in the past.

Southern Miss's football program went downhill faster than SMU's did in the 80's. And there is nothing interesting to see regarding the Longhorns.

It's always been their trap game, especially since Spurrier has been there.

In UGA's favor, it looks like Spurrier has somehow found a QB that is even worse than Connor Shaw.
