College Footbal: A Look Back - Keith Byars

    Keith Byars

Tale of the Tape – 6’1” 245 lbs. RB

Awards – 1984, Consensus All American, Big10 Player of the Year, 2nd in Heisman voting

College career – had a breakout sophomore season in 1983 with 1199 yards rushing and 22 TDs. Returned 2 kicks, one of which was a 99-yard TD in the Fiesta Bowl. Huge junior year leading the nation with 1764 yards rushing and 24 TDs. Also caught 42 passes for 479 yards and a nice 11.4 average. Averaged over 30 rushing/receiving attempts per game. Finished 2nd in the Heisman to…Doug Flutie! Broke his foot his senior year and had only 213 rushing yards. Still managed to be a 10th overall pick in the 1986 NFL draft.

What happened next: The NFL – Unique player in the NFL. Perhaps the only true H-back in NFL history who did an equal amount of rushing, receiving, and blocking. Only two 100-yard rushing games in his career (both early in his career with Eagles), but very effective in short yardage.

I love players like Byars. They're the Jose Oquendos of the NFL. Im sure many can but NFL teams don't want or need to use them in that way.
Best reason to have a license.
