Then the next year Kiffin would only let him throw 18-20 times a game and nothing but short passes. Cable expanded his game and he looked loads better. Russell over Garcia by far.
How much would it hurt to have Russel get another year to develop though.

      1. It will push Russel to play better because he would have a QB ready to step in if he fucks up

      2. Jeff Garcia would know that there is a young QB on the bench that could take over if he fucks ups.

      3. Russel would get another year to develop under a veteran QB

It is a win win situation if the raiders sign Garcia

I'm not disputing his talent and potential raiderfan. I'm just saying he has been a huge disappointment and having Garcia there is the best thing right now for that offense.

Everytime I here a raider fan talking about him they always are saying stuff like oh its only a couple games or one season. He showed how good he COULD be. But until he lives up to the number one pick, I'm not impressed at all with him.

That's a surprise.. I've always respected Garcia as a QB, wouldn't be surprised to see him win the starting job at some point.
Raiders may finish 2nd this year.

LMAO at some of the people here, there is no way in hell Garcia starts over Russel. The only reason why Garcia is signed is just to be a mentor nothing more and Russel is far from a bust he progressed well at the end of the year and played good for his first full season starting

Thank you. Finally someone that gets it. I was beginning to think everyone else here was actually indeed retarded.

Garcia will be nothing more than a teacher and a mentor to Russell. He will provide some great leadership and will be able to teach JR about what it takes to win in this league, not to mention how to handle yourself appropriately. JR needs that, he is young and could use a role-model. Garcia is a 3 time pro-bowler, he has done some nice things in this league.

Secondly, I think the Raiders will win 7-9 games this year. I may be a bit optimistic, but the moves this offseason have all been toward the goal of creating a team-like atmosphere and building character in the locker room. We won't find out whether that attitude transfers over to the field till September but this team is starting to install some confidence in me.

What exactly did you expect from him in his 1st full season as a starter? That's an interesting comment coming from someone who has high hopes for chad henne. You already have alex smith on your team in miami they call him john beck.

Eh, with the 49ers? I believe the dude holds most of the teams passing records. Not to mention they were at their best when he was at the helm. He left with Mariucci and T.O., and the team went to shit.

Ehhh two little guys named Joe Montana and Steve Young would most likely have to argue with that. Hell even John Brodie!

With that being said he was still a solid QB with the 49ers.

As for Jamarcus Russell I hope Garcia gets the start over him so Raiders fans can see a real QB. I mean why have Garcia sit on the bench, he has 11 more %'ge points on his completion percent. That's huge! Going from a 53.8% qb to a 64.9% qb!

The only way Garcia goes to Oakland is if they promise him an open competition for the starting QB job. Who do you think you have a better shot to win with. A young developing QB who still might need time before he can lead a team or a QB that has had a QB rating above 90 his past three seasons and has made the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 seasons. No one is saying Russel isnt the QB of the future, e just needs more time to develop.

I didn't mean all-time. I meant that while he was there, they were a top team in the NFL.

Russell is fine. The last 3 games of last season were his best games as he threw 6 TDs and 2 INTs and had QB rating's of 85.7, 128.1, and 98.9.

He obviously needs more time but he isn't terrible. He threw 13 TDs and 8 INTs last year. That's far from the rookie QB in history, yet some of you are trying to hard to paint it out like that.

Garcia is a better QB at this point but he is a completely different QB from Russell. There is no point in having him start because this team isn't a championship caliber team. Russell is fine learning by playing.

There's no future with Garcia and at this point I think JR is ready to learn by playing and not watching.

So he's gonna bring leadership and be a mentor as a back-up?

I'm thinking it's a "we'll see" proposition with Garcia... we don't have to rehash how he was effective when placed on a decent-to-good team (Detroit and Cleveland will always be shit) and is always going to be a help to any rookie QB in the league.

That being said, everybody here is like "hey, wait a while... give Russell time... he's only had so much time to play and learn the pro game..."

The NFL is a "win now/what have you done for me lately league." It's tough that Russell has to suffer for it but if he is what Raider Nation hopes he will be, then Garcia showing his face in camp won't affect the young QB from LSU.

...however, if Garcia gets the starter spot and keeps it for more than 4 games, it's time to cut your losses and draft a new quarterback.
