    Buffalo Bills hire Rex Ryan

Good for him, doesn't have to sell his house now at least.

I wonder if Atlanta was really hoping he would go with them or just media blabber.

edit: I feel like Marshawn Lynch now. He will have to sell his house because Buffalo isn't near NYC :o

The Buffalo Bills are putting the finishing touches on deal that will make Rex Ryan their next head coach, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The Buffalo Bills are putting the finishing touches on a deal that will make Rex Ryan their next head coach, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The hiring of Ryan would complete an extensive coaching search for the Bills, who have interviewed 12 candidates since Doug Marrone opted out of his contract on Dec. 31.

The Bills conducted a second interview with Ryan on Saturday night, sources told Schefter.

Ryan spent the last six seasons with the Jets, going 46-50 and helping New York reach the AFC Championship Game in each of his first two years.

But Ryan and general manager John Idzik were fired on Dec. 29 after the Jets went 4-12 and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

The 52-year-old Ryan also has interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons' coaching vacancy. The defensive-minded Ryan will inherit a Bills defense that ranked fourth in the NFL and had a league-leading 54 sacks this past season.

Rex as the HC and Schwartz as the DC. Man that defense has the potential to be even more terrifying.

I like the hire. Rex might be the best HC Buffalo has seen since Levy.

I like the hire, but I hope he can convince Schwartz to stay and keep the 4-3 D in place.

It's clear Terry Pegula wanted to make the big-name splash hire for his first head coach. Considering the rumor that Buffalo was also considering Mike Shanahan coming on as the GM with Kyle as his head coach, that's the direction they went, and I'm not sure it's the right decision. That's not an indictment on Ryan, I think he's a good coach and caught in a bad situation with personnel with the Jets.

However, with Buffalo's defensive performance last year, as well as having a great coordinator on staff in Jim Schwartz already, the smart play on Buffalo's part would have been hiring an offensive-minded coach, who could bring in a staff that could work on immediately developing EJ Manuel. All they would need to do would be allowing Jim Schwartz to do his thing on defense. Now, a defensive-minded coach takes over, whose own defensive scheme is different than what Schwartz runs, and the coach has a huge decision to make that will likely be make-or-break his tenure in Buffalo.

Sorry, but Buffalo made the wrong hire here, and it really has nothing to do with Ryan being a bad coach. I also think in any other situation, Ryan would turn down this job, but I think the chance to put the screws to the Jets and Belichick is too much for him to let go.

So Rex goes to a team with a worse QB situation than the Jets?
