Report: Browns To Draft Sanchez or Crabtree
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 18, 2009, 5:51 p.m.

The Cleveland Browns will either draft USC quarterback Mark Sanchez or Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree with the fifth overall pick of the first round, according to an unconfirmed report from WOIO-TV in Cleveland.

Citing anonymous sources, the station is reporting that the Browns have made up their minds and have identified Sanchez and Crabtree as their top targets in the draft.

Is this an elaborate smokescreen leaked to the local media or does this thing have legs?

We’ll find out the truth in exactly one week.

Crabtree, in particular, could make sense given that the Browns have reportedly been shopping wide receiver Braylon Edwards in trade discussions.

The Browns have quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson on the roster, but don’t appear to be particularly attached to either one of them.

The Brown have been consistently linked to Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo in most mock drafts.

Boston College nose guard B.J. Raji is another strong possibility under a scenario where he would play nose guard in the Browns’ 3-4 scheme and Shaun “Big Baby” Rogers would move to defensive end.

It's a new regime and they are said to not be very high on either of those guys.

However, I do believe that part is a smoke screen. Floating you are interested in Sanchez makes other teams want to trade up to get him.. thus pushing a player you actually want down to you.

In this case, that player may very well be Aaron Curry

The new management in Cleveland has been trying to trade Quinn. The rumors say that they are expecting a first round pick in return for him (lol). I wouldn't be surprised to see Quinn switch teams on draft day.

hmm - i think sanchez would be a dumb move, and if you're lookin to move edwards then crabtree would be the smart pick no?

I would not want to see Sanchez to the browns.

            1. Then my boy Brady Quinn could lose his job
            2. Because Sanchez in a Brown uniform will lead to dumb dirty sanchez jokes, and it will be overused like crazy.

            So hopefully they go crabtree

Im really hoping for Crabtree. Im not sure why people think WR is only a need if they trade Edwards. Jerivicius - Cut. Stallworth - Jail. They need a WR pretty bad, and since Crabtree grades so high on everyone's board, they would be crazy to pass him up.

Maybe im just being too hopeful.

Cleveland doesn't make any sense at all.

Plan A: Trade Braylon Edwards, draft Michael Crabtree.

Plan B: Trade Brady Quinn, draft Mark Sanchez.

                What...the...fuck.

Im not sure anyone is sold on Edwards being a franchise player. If not, they dont want to pay him like one. That is the reason they would trade him and draft Crabtree...

That said... both scenarios are just smoke to get someone to trade them and move up. That is the ONLY reason a team that picks 5th would publicly lay out draft plans a week ahead of time.

its starts in the trenches, after they trade Braylon for a forst and Quinn for a first theyll have 3 first rounders, they should take Raji, a d-line of Rogers - Raji - Williams is a very scary one. They have a great o-line, they should build the d-line and then use there other first rounders to get a WR and an OLB and they will be fine, in saying this though i hope theydont do this because i am a ravens fan lol

                      I feel they draft crabtree

I think Sanchez is a front.

If anything, they need linebackers. They run a 3-4 and Williams-Rogers-Smith were decent last year. They gave the LBs plenty of chances to make plays, but the LBs just plain didnt. Once Smith got hurt, it was all downhill.

Id like them to take Crabtree, then address LB in the 2nd. There are enough DE/LB tweeners to get one early. Larry English maybe?

Shouldn't you be praying someone in the top 5 takes Sanchez so the Broncos don't select him? That would be much worse for a Raider/USC fan right?

I see Sanchez going to Seattle and the Browns getting Curry if he is there or Crabtree if he is not.

why? I feel like Raider fans take after Al Davis...you want the flashy pick, not realizing your offensive line has been horrible for years and years...you take Pillsbury Smith or an OT and J Russell will stand upright, Higgins will get open, Miller will be beasting, Dmac and bush will run wild, and you will win some games...as seen with Calvin Johnson going to the Lions (who is EASILY much better then Crabtree) a WR doesnt help with no o-line.
