Trust me, he's not playing next season. Pepp has been doing fine, Stafford will sit the year out and learn the NFL while Detroit builds their program. It makes more sense to get your QB now and let him learn this season, as opposed to waiting until next season and throwing him to the wolves as you mentioned.
Deal in place with curry, hinges on stafford.

I'm sure others have said something about it, but Stafford's agent is supposedly looking around for better offers because the Lions have their final offer on the table, so i think it's safe to say that if he doesn't sign by early afternoon tomorrow we'll be picking Curry.
Imo, Curry > Stafford
We can get a QB next year.
I feel comfortable playing Culpepper, he's in the best shape since coming out of college.Last edited by Apocalypse; 04-23-2009, 12:49 PM.

Curry has already said he'll sign for cheap compared to other #1 overall picks.
Do what the Falcons did. Build up your team through free agency and the draft, then draft a QB who is ready to start after you have some pieces in place.
A lot of QB's got fucked when they had no talent to help them out.
I do think you need a QB to build your franchise around, but I don't think that you can actually build your franchise on a QB (if that makes sense). Peyton Manning might be the only QB as of late that jump started an organization, but even then he had guys like Marshall Faulk and Marvin Harrison.Comment

Is Stafford really the best option though, especially at the #1 pay slot? You could take a LB this year, and have a shot for a Sam Bradford type player next year. It's not like the Lions will be 10-6 with a bad selection next season. You still have a LOT of holes to fill, and one year on the bench won't do anything if you still don't have talent surrounding him.

I've also thought that great linebackers can be found in the later parts of the draft. You don't need to get the best linebacker available to get a stud. We could easily wait until 33 to get the best MLB prospect in this year's class (James Lauranitis).
But at this point, it's out of our hands. The deal is on the table for Stafford, and he has until Friday to decide or Curry is the first overall pick (we already have a deal in place with him). So let's see if Stafford is a man of his word and really wants to play for Detroit.Comment

Like i said earlier, i haven't read it anywhere but i've talked with friends and family in Detroit and they say that Stafford's agent is looking at other teams to see what deals they'd work out because apparantly he isn't satisfied with what the Lions final offer.
I hope he doesn't agree, so we can get Curry and go 0-Line at 20, then draft a QB next year.

I want Smith and Mauluga, but if we get Curry and Britton, I will be happy.
I hope and pray we don't get Stafford. While many say we won't play him this year, I still think he would see way too much action considering we'll probably be out of the playoff hunt within the first 7 weeks of the season. The fans will be clammoring for the new prospect and we'll have no real reason to keep having Culpepper out there to flounder.
Anyone with eyes know that our biggest needs are on offensive line and on the defense, putting a QB out there as a sacrificial lamb will only hurt things.Comment

Smith was never in a three point stance and hardly ever had to run-block at Baylor. We're obviously going to ask him to do that in the NFL, but is he capable of mauling guys?
And Maualuga didn't play on 3rd down in college. We need an every down guy that's going to make a substantial impact.
And for the gajillionth time... Stafford will not play next season if he is not ready. Period.
And I seriously can't stand the Lions' fanbase and how negative they can be. Talking about next year's draft or saying we're out of the hunt after week 7 honestly makes me sick to my stomach. I don't give a fuck what happened last year, this is 2009, let's go win a Superbowl. Yeah, I get it, you're being "realistic". In your realistic world, did you have Miami beating New England last year? How about Atlanta in the post-season? ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.. BE POSITIVE ABOUT YOUR FOOTBALL TEAM.Comment

lions wouldn't take sam bradford next year becuz tim tebow will be available lol.
But I'm liking how Detroit will end up saving money and that means majority of the draft picks will be signed and with the big FA market they'll be likely to pick some people up...
(side note they should look at picking m. harrison up.Comment

But there's just as many questions about those two guys.

Why do you keep insisting this is true? Same thing was said about Joey (he played). Everybody knows its better to let the QB sit a year, but when you're team is 2-6 and your QB is stinking up the stadium...they have a tendency to "be ahead of where we expected him." A glance around the league and you'll see how many QBs were going to watch all season that suddenly end up playing around Week 10.
Thats not even accounting for the injury possibility. Culpepper has a very shaky past health wise, do you think we are going to put Drew Stanton in over Stafford if 'pep blows out his knee again?
Lets be real about the NFL. Its a business. Owners want Jerseys being bought, fans turning on the TV appearances, publicity and everything else. If an owner thinks that starting the rookie QB is going to bring that on, that has a tendency to happen.Comment

or else eventually we'll have the New York Yankees of football because teams like Dallas will buy everyone while teams like Green Bay who have survived because of the NFL shared revenue will be at a loss.Comment

well not to jump the gun but lockout/strike seems to be inevitable no way are players going to want a cap and owners will not go without one. The issue that seems to be the one that will get hammered out first is the rookie cap.Comment
