i would love for them to go to a 2 man booth, there is no need for the third guy. Cossel was the only man who could pull off that gig.

To add to this story, Kornheiser says his fear of flying is why he left the position.

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) -- Former Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden is replacing Tony Kornheiser on ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcast team. Kornheiser cited a fear of flying in his decision to leave after three years.

The network said Monday that Gruden will be in the booth with Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski when the show starts its 40th season this fall.

"If I could handpick a replacement of a football guy, I would cast a net and drag in Jon Gruden," Kornheiser said in a statement released by the network. "He is the two things you most want -- smart and funny -- and has the two things I don't -- good hair and a tan."

Gruden led the Bucs to the 2003 Super Bowl title but was fired after this past season after his team lost four straight games to miss the playoffs. He worked as a guest analyst this year with the NFL Network during the draft and scouting combine.

"To join Mike and Jaws in the booth and to work alongside this top-notch team is going to be a real thrill," Gruden said.

Gruden will make his debut with ESPN with a preseason game on Aug. 13, a Super Bowl rematch between the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kornheiser will continue to appear on ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption," and is relieved it doesn't require air travel.

"My fear of planes is legendary and sadly true," he said. "When I looked at the upcoming schedule it was the perfect storm that would've frequently moved me from the bus to the air."

Gruden was an NFL head coach the past 11 seasons, with the Buccaneers (2002-08) and Oakland Raiders (1998-01). He had a 100-85 record, leading his teams to five division titles.

His best season came in 2002, when the Buccaneers went 12-4 and then beat the Raiders 48-21 in the Super Bowl. Gruden was 38 at the time and the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl.

Gruden began his NFL coaching career in 1990 when San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren hired him as an assistant. When Holmgren was hired to coach the Packers in 1992, Gruden became his wide receivers coach.

After three seasons, Gruden went to the Eagles as an offensive coordinator, and in 1998 became coach of the Raiders at 34.

Possibly the most ridiculous excuse ever...considering that the top person in the profession (Madden) 'somehow' managed to have a 30+ year career despite having a fear of flying.

Does anyone have a brain anymore?

          Yeah, I call bullshit too.

You're not John Madden, at any rate. Suck it up, bitch.

Incredible, this is exactly what I mean....here you have someone ripping Gruden's booth work to shreds, before he's ever done it yet!!!

Exactly. Not to mention the schedule is no different than any other year. What does he mean by saying the schedule this year prohibits non-air traveling? Is he implying that they were previously tailoring the schedule to be within the East Coast, specifically the Megapolis?

It's hard to get the ball down the field when your quarterback refuses to throw it downfield.

I agree with Blitz. Get your head out of the sand. Steve is a walking, talking, crying vagina. The guy crows about all these sports he played. The guy played soccer. It was the only sport he was good at. He talks about hockey as if he is a aficionado - yet Phil Esposito will tell you that the two worst people he's ever seen on a pair of skates are Whiteney Johnson and Steve Duemig.

I for one can't stand Tony on MNF. In the beginning of every game he would pick a storyline, for example lets say the Saints are playing, he would pick something like Reggie Bush's USC stats and performance and just stick with that all game. Every time Reggie would come up to the line of scrimmage he would start talking about Reggie's USC plays or his stats and it would get to the point where you would want to choke him out. I think with Gruden your going to get more knowledgeable things coming from him. He has coached in the NFL, he knows the ins and outs, he can look at the field and have a better understanding of whats going on, opposed to Kornheiser who would stick to a storyline all game and ask Jaws dumb questions.

to ba fair, madden didnt have a daily show on espn to do as well as travel around in the bus all week to get to teh next game. as far as I know madden hasnt set foot on aplane since he was a coach in the 70's.

not that i am sticking up for T.K, i do like him but he is a whiner.

So he HAS to force himself to take a bus all the time ?
Depending on the schedule he would be on one coast for a month or at least in close proximity. Being on a bus or train non stop can take its toll if you dont enjoy it on some level. If he doesnt want to do it he doesnt want to do it. Pretty ridiculous to whine about him for years then when he leaves scoff at his reason for doing it. As if you expected him to leave and say "I sucked and message board guys hated me so Im gone".

I love Kornheiser on PTI. Didnt understand his lack of homework or knowledge on MNF. We'll see how Gruden pans out.

It will be great to have a coach in the booth. A guy who can break down the film from all levels and really explain the game across the board. He's young, was recently in the NFL so he will not be "out of touch" with the game the way some former players/coaches are and I am really expecting him to do well.Honestly it's too bad he will probably only be there for a year.

Not really scoffing at it as much as calling BS on it. This was just an amicable excuse for both parties. He really got replaced but pulled the traveling card to save face.
