Until MMAers are making the kind of money the boxers are.. IMO Boxing will still be > MMA. Not for my viewing preference, but because the big money fights are still in boxing.

yeah, but there's only a very, very small handful of big money fighters in boxing. Is it better to have just a few guys earning big bucks or a much larger pool of guys earning decent bucks?Last edited by Steel Mamba; 06-01-2009, 05:15 PM.Comment

But MMAers arent really earning decent bucks im comparison IMO. Fighter salaries is a big issue in MMA IMO. But theres not much you can do when theres a monopoly. I dont know how much small name boxers are getting, but you also cant ignore that theres small named MMA orgs making even less. Anyone with a name in boxing is making a killing compared to MMA.Comment

Boxing has better overall athletes and talent because there is more money for the top paid fighters and has an actual legit amatuer system in place
MMA pulls from so many different sports, BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing/Kickbowing, Judo, etc...where as boxers grow up just boxing there entire life and dont have to learn a entire different skill or skills to compete in MMA
NHB/MMA is only 15 years old in the USA where boxing has been around forever
There are plusses and minuses to both set ups, money wise that is
Also, the UFC just markets the UFC, but there is still a whole other world of MMA that I would say more than half of the MMA fans dont even know about
Until the sport gets covered in a legit manner by bigger name outlets it will always be on the lower level of sportsLiquidrob's Top 10 Fighters Rankings

I do agree with some of the article tho .... Boxing hurt itself with bad cards , bad decisions and so on but it is no means dying .Comment

3 main reasons why MMA is beating boxing AT THE MOMENT:
1. Marketing - The UFC markets its fighters and often pits major guys against eachother. Shows like Ultimate Fighter build up fighters as actual people with personalities and weekly shows not only show new fights, but also classic fights many might not have seen. All this does is get their faces out there.
2. Lack of fighters - Right now, boxing only has about 4 major fighters and if they aren't on the card, the PPV doesn't get much of a draw. On the other hand, even in terribly thin weight classes like Heavyweight, the UFC can actually go without the best heavyweight in the world and still make major draws. They just have depth at multiple weight classes and don't need to only have 4 fighters to get by.
3. TOO MANY BELTS! - Boxing has too many belts and quite frankly, the people that fans actually want to see fight eachother never do. On the other hand, there is really only the UFC in MMA in America (yes, I know there are others, but UFC is far and away number 1). They know that their belts are the biggest and best and often put them on the line. People get to see Rampage vs Liddell, Penn vs. GSP, Lesnar vs. Coutior (sp), and people love the UFC for it.
I love Boxing, my 2nd favorite sport, MMA/UFC/whatever just doesn't appeal to me, not saying that there is anything wrong with it, its just not for me, thus I am no expert and won't even chime in on the age old debate about who wins.Comment

If people don't think Boxing is dying they're kidding themselves. I have nothing against boxing, but it's a lost cause in the next 10-15 years.
Why?
The Ultimate Fighter. Unfortunately the middle school/high school/college crowd doesn't normally have 30 dollars to prop down on a PPV and they can't get into the local establishment to watch (The older college kids can, but thats only your last year or so). So when do they see boxing? It's hardly on ESPN, sometimes on showtime. But those aren't name fights, they (really, us) never see the great fights.
The Ultimate Fighter is free (I mean really, who doesn't have cable), it's on weekly and has marathons constantly. If you want to watch UFC, just turn on your TV. It's on a weeknight, so nobody is doing a lot, it's not Friday Night boxing when everybody is at a kegger.
Then, you walk into blockbuster and UFC has it's own wall of fights. It's all over youtube. The greatest knockouts are played constantly on Spike (plus Ultimate Fight Night)...at good times.
All boxing really had going for itself was it's virtual monopoly on video games (and, Movies). With UFC undisputed proving to be a solid title that monopoloy is gone.
Boxing will survive of course, and for the time being it will out-sell MMA. Theres a significant portion of the population that finds the MMA barbaric (Think 40 year olds+) and those people tend to plop down the money on PPV. However, they're getting older and more and more kids are going to grow up on UFC (assuming they keep up this marketing).
Boxing purists will deny it, but within our lifetimes Boxing is going to cease social relevance.Comment

Floyd Mayweather`s agent was also talking about having his next fight (after JMM) at Wembley stadium which is going to bring in 80-90,000 fans at the door never mind PPV costs on top of that .
And then theres the seas of Puerto Ricans who swarm to see Miguel Cotto when all he is doing is sitting in a suit in an interview
This of course isint mentioning Mexico , where Chavez JR (son of a legend) is bound to be huge when he gets a few interim titles under his belt .
Obviously America is where most of the money comes from but the huge intrest in boxing from these other countries alone will keep it going longer than you make it sound . Boxing is being perceived by most people as on the downfall yet record breaking fights and fight venues are being talked about for fights in the next 3 years .
The fact that Boxing still topped the top 10 list this year and the year before shows something , hell even a washed up Felix Trinidad v Roy Jones made it to number 8. Boxing needs to learn from its mistakes if it hopes to stay at a high rate but with people like De La Hoya and co now more involved i can only see improvements in fight cards and such in the future .Comment

While Boxing and MMA are combat sports, thats is essentially where there similiarites end.... MMA is a brand new ( in the sense of history of sports) sport that has alot of people excited about the possibilities.... Boxing has tons of history... and will never completely die.... if an exciting heavyweight comes around Boxing relevance could go right back to a high....
Boxing should try to work out a deal with one of the major networks ( Fox, CBS, ABC, or NBC) to get some live fights on their air maybe on a Friday or Saturday night...hell maybe even a Sunday afternoon... with some of those fighters who are on the HBO Boxing after Dark and the ShoBOx fighters.... these guys are young hungry fighters who are upcoming in the sport and would get extreme exposure at this time.... as a avid boxing fan.... is boxing dying... no....its in a recession..... some young exciting boxers can pull it out of it though, along with a few tweaks to the buiness structure.... they should do away with the mandatory challenger structure altogether....IMO...Comment

I'm a casual boxing fan who will watch the free stuff whenever a big name fighter is on...which is to say, there hasn't been much in recent years past the Mayweather, De La Hoya, Hatton & Pacquiao stuff.
Right now, UFC is on pace to be the PPV king for something like the 3rd time out of the last 4 years (or at the very least, the second straight year).
I just can't get into boxing because I have no idea who the fighters are past big names above (and Roy Jones, the Klitschko's and maybe Tarver). I'm not watching HBO/SHO boxing with up and comers because I don't care. However, I will watch SHOmma to see journeyman and other fights because I like MMA over boxing.
I'm not even sure of how boxing works these days since a lot of fighters are promoting now.

Thats one country .... forget that fact that boxing is huge in multiple countries while you are at it. Ricky Hatton (who is average or below) can pull crowds of 60,000 people in England so god knows what would happen if somebody good and new came onto the boxing scene in England .
Floyd Mayweather`s agent was also talking about having his next fight (after JMM) at Wembley stadium which is going to bring in 80-90,000 fans at the door never mind PPV costs on top of that .

I really don't think anybody is talking about any country other than America. Latin America is irrelevant in a sports discussion, they're poor so it doesn't really matter how popular something is (in terms of PPV $) and England is a different culture (you wouldn't compare NFL popularity to Soccer...because, well, it really doesn't matter).
But i get youComment
