Zherdev won't be playing for New York this season coming. Z decided to go to arbitration because he has an over inflated sense of his value. Sather has made a good decision in not paying the arbitrator's value which is believed to be about $3.9m (+700k from what the Rangers submitted)
I remember reading something he said which makes me think he will want to sign in the Atlantic with a rival team. However this gutless wrench truly belongs in the KHL where his lack of commitment is acceptable. Proof that heart > hands if you want to be an elite NHL player.
Dubinsky (now that's a player with heart) should be getting an extension very soon as a result.Last edited by wr50l; 08-04-2009, 12:04 PM.Comment

Shanahan returns to Devils for 22nd season
Brendan Shanahan isn't done yet. The 40-year-old veteran wing is coming back for his 22nd season after agreeing to a new contract to remain with the New Jersey Devils.
"Brendan Shanahan is an experienced veteran who can play in all situations, and accepts any role to help the team win," said Devils' President/CEO/General Manager Lou Lamoriello. "We are delighted to have him back."
Shanahan, who is the League's active leading scorer with 656 goals, should be in training camp when it opens Sept. 12. He didn't join the Devils until mid-January last season after sitting out the first half of the season unsigned.
Shanahan had 6 goals and 8 assists in 34 games last season and added a goal and 2 assists in seven playoff games.Canucks re-sign Jannik Hansen
Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have re-signed right winger Jannik Hansen. In keeping with club policy terms were not disclosed.
Hansen, 23, recorded 21 points (6-15-21) in 55 games played with the Canucks and one point (1-0-1) in two games played with the Manitoba Moose. The Herlev, Denmark native set career highs for most goals (6), assists (15) and points (21) in a single season and finished 25th in scoring among all Rookies in the League. The 6'1", 201-pound right winger also appeared in two playoff games.
Hansen was originally selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the 9th round, 287th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.Veteran defenseman Numminen retires
According to reports in Finland, veteran Buffalo Sabres defenseman Teppo Numminen is retiring after 20 NHL seasons.
The 41-year-old defenseman was selected with the 29th pick of the 1986 Entry Draft and went on to play 1,372 regular-season games with the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars and Sabres. He scored 117 goals and 520 assists and scored an additional 9 goals and 14 assists in 82 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Last season Numminen skated in 57 games for the Sabres, after playing in only one game in 2007-08. A heart problem was discovered prior to the '07-08 season and Numminen missed the majority of the season after undergoing open-heart surgery.Wings' Jiri Hudler gets $5.75M in arbitration, but still going to Russia
Detroit Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler was given a two-year, $5.75-million award in NHL arbitration during the weekend. But it doesn't change his plans to leave Detroit and play next season in Russia.
“Obviously he’s going to Russia because it’s an opportunity for a financial windfall,†Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Monday. “But, right now his plans are to come back and play in the NHL and come back and play for the Red Wings.â€
While the Wings aren’t happy to be losing the 25-year-old forward, they’re happy with the award and will leave the door open for Hudler to return when he wants.
“We thought we had a good chance to win a salary in the high 2’s in Year 1, but based on the comparables, the second year was going to be a number in the 3’s,†Holland said.
It was speculated that Hudler could get between $3 million and $4 million per year. He will make $2.75 million in the first year of his NHL contract and $3 million in the second. In Russia, he stands to make $10 million (tax-free) over two seasons.
The Wings and Hudler’s agent, Petr Svoboda, came to a deal ahead of Thursday’s arbitration hearing, which is why Holland didn’t attend the Toronto meeting. Hudler’s side was worried that if he negotiated a deal ahead of arbitration, the Kontinental Hockey League could choose not to register his contract with Moscow Dynamo.
The KHL registered Hudler’s contract the day of the arbitration hearing because they believe NHL restricted free agents, even after filing for arbitration, are free to sign elsewhere.
By doing it this way, the Wings avoided getting hit with a higher cap number if they had lost the arbitration ruling and didn’t burn bridges with a player who could return in two seasons in the prime of his career.
With the arbitration over and Hudler heading to Russia, Holland will try to sign one, possibly two players who can add scoring to the lineup. The Wings hope to add players who can score at least 15 goals.
The Wings could have as much as $3 million available, depending on whether Justin Abdelkader starts the season in Grand Rapids, whether they trade one of their eight defensemen or whether they place defenseman Andreas Lilja (still suffering headaches from a concussion) on long-term injured reserve.
Holland said he’s still interested in former Wing Jason Williams, but declined to say who else he has talked to the past two weeks. Alex Tanguay, Vinny Prospal, Todd Bertuzzi, Petr Sykora and Mike Comrie are potential candidates.
RIP West
