I agree with Ric Flair - Bret Hart's biggest fan is Bret Hart.
Hart was a star in a down time for the WWE when they had to get the focus off the steroid freaks.
Once the WCW/WWE wars got heated, he was pushed out of the top spot because he wasn't good enough. Period.
A true pro would have done what he was told in Montreal. Hart was told to drop the belt, he refused. That's not how pro wrestling works.
First of all, Hart was arguably one of the three biggest stars in all of wrestling in 1997, and was a consistant rating mover. The idea he "wasnt good enough" is absurd. He was being pushed out because McMahon was in financial ruins and couldnt afford the 20 year multi million dollar deal he gave him. It was 100% financial.
As for Montreal, Hart had creative control written into his deal. He offered to drop the belt, at minimum, 15 other times before and after Montreal...to multiple opponents, including Shawn Michaels. It was his contractual right to pick the date. He could have refused to drop it to Shawn too, but he never did. He just didnt want to drop it in Montreal.
McMahon gave him a bad contract he couldnt afford, then told Hart to go negotiate with WCW so he could get out of it. Hart never wanted to leave in the first place.

I don't have time right now, but you really need to understand the facts of the situation.

Shame on Dave for trying to shit on his countrymen like that. Bret Hart TRIED to be professional about it all.. Vince took the pro out of it all.Comment

I just watched through the entire boxed set of SummerSlam... Actually, I'm watching the final disc as I type this... But as I watched, I did a little Random Thoughts deal on each show on another forum. And no bullshit, Bret Hart had Match of the Night on every SS he was on save one. Even when he was just with the Hart Foundation, they were the best match. I went into this little venture as a moderate fan of Hart with fond memories. But this has really raised my respect for the guy.
And Dave, Hart spent his entire career being a true pro. The situation only escalated because Shawn Michaels told people - including Hart - that he would not job anymore. He would not lose. So Hart enacted a clause guaranteed in his contract. A contract he was nullifying to help Vince McMahon financially (apparently) and a clause put in there because Vinnie Mac had a history of making people look bad when they left. The WWF was left with multiple options as to have Hart drop the belt, as it was one the specific thing he would not (again, because Michaels said he would not do the same) and a different finish was agreed upon. After an agreement was made, Vince broke that agreement. So explain to me again how it was entirely Hart's fault?Comment

At least we got to see Bret Hart knock out Goldberg with the metal chest plate when Goldberg tried to spear Bret.
Bret in WCW had a lot of potential and I liked his edge. Too bad WCW sucked at that point.Comment

As much as I didn't like Bret Hart he could be funny when being a dickhead.
