Congrats to Canada. Coming back from 2 goals down to force OT showed a lot of grit by Team USA.

Sidney Crosby wins it for his country in sudden death overtime. How appropriate.

Great game. Canada outplayed us but we fought every inch of the way.

          See you in 4 years.

I just hate that it was that little faggot Crosby. And I'm even a Penguin fan.

Holy cow, what a game. Great fight back by the US to take it to OT, wish we had buried some chances earlier (posts, Crosby's break), but I will take the gold

Can't believe how quickly it turned from being a disappointing Olympics to setting records for gold medal wins

Before this thread turns into a pissing match, there are a number of things that have to be said-

                - the US did overachieve. But looking back, was it really a huge overachieves? Playing on an NHL ice surface, the Americans did what they had to do. Use their speed, forecheck like demons, and rely on a dominant goalie. With less surface to use, they cut off the rink and forced other teams into mistakes. All in all, a great gameplan and I don't think a gold would have been an injustice.

                - the physicality of this tournament was underrated. Russia, Sweden and Finland weren't ready for it. Small teams like Latvia and Switzerland that were willing to leave it all out were able to pressure the more 'European' teams and skill wasn't enough

                - at the end, Canada still shone through. As discussed here earlier, the game with the US in prelims was closer than 5-3, and this game was the same. I felt Canada created more chances, but the US did well to bury theirs when they had them.

                - the medal debate. It's stupid. Canada setting a record of 14 gold medals is fantastic. American fans will bring out the more medals argument, which is valid. However, as of those Olympics America was the only country who ranked by total medals and not by gold. The BBC and most other international sources have Canada as the top ranked country (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olym...10/default.stm).

I can only assume that if the US had more golds and not total medals, American sites would adapt this criteria as well.

                - To be clear, I am not begrudging the US getting 37 medals. Great achievement. It's just their is not point in having an argument over which is better. I'm sure when the US set the previous record at Salt Lake, it was a huge deal. Canada shattered the host nation record be four golds.

                    U.S. - 9G, 15S, 13B = 37 Total Medals
                    Canada - 14G, 7S, 5B = 26 Total Medals

If you want to look at it how the Olympics should do it (3 points for Gold, 2 points for Silver, 1 point for Bronze) this is how it looks..

                    U.S. - 27G, 30S, 13B = 70 Total Pts
                    Canada - 42G, 14S, 5B = 61 Total Pts

Did you read the article? Or maybe you're so jaded from 3 weeks of incredibly shitty NBC coverage?

i dont care to get in the medal debate either but there is one major flaw with your argument.

Medal standings by the OFFICIAL website of these olympics is done by medal count, not by gold medal count. so the rankings the US media outlets use is the official rankings unlike the other countries who go by gold medals.

I'm not sure if you read anything I posted, but all credit to the US for getting more medals. Breaking (shattering?) the record for most golds by a home nation (more than the US) is a pretty big story though.

If the same thing had happened at Salt Lake, and Canada had more medals, while the US had more gold, the story would be the same. I hope no one pretends different.

When the Olympics were in Beijing it was done by golds.

It's entirely dependent on persepective. I'm sure if VANOC saw it going this way, they may had adjusted the criteria. When it's in Russia, and Canada tops the table again (hopefully) will your argument be invalid?

America (and now Canada) are the only nations who view medal tables by totals and not by golds. Frankly, I don't care. It's more the fact that Americans are using this total medal argument, which I concede, when much of the worlds population view the table in an entirely different way

Don't worry guys wr50l is here to offer a neutral perspective.

Gold medals are always better than silver or bronze. Quit making up shitty points systems to justify 2nd and 3rd places being better than 1st. These athletes don't train for 4 years to be second highest on the podium.
