SF Challengers 9 ratings peak with 254,000 viewers for Kaufman-Modafferi

Strikeforce Challengers 9 ratings peak with 254,000 viewers for Kaufman-Modafferi

Ratings for this past weekend's Showtime-televised Strikeforce Challengers 9 event proved solid as the show averaged an audience of 197,000 viewers, an industry source today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

The peak audience actually came for the night's co-main event, a title fight between women's welterweight champ Sarah Kaufman and challenger Roxanne Modafferi that spiked with 254,000 viewers.

The fight actually topped the Shane Del Rosario vs. Lolohea Mahe headliner, which drew 226,000 viewers.

Strikeforce Challengers 9 took place this past Friday, July 23, at Comcast Arena of Everett in Washington state. It airs live on the East Coast and via three-hour delay on the West Coast.

The talk of the event, of course, was the Kaufman vs. Modafferi fight. In her first title defense, Kaufman scored a slam-KO that knocked her opponent out cold. The finishing move actually earned the No. 4 spot on ESPN "SportsCenter's" Plays of the Week.

As far as the prospects-driven Strikeforce Challengers event series, these latest ratings were pretty much par for the course. Despite a late-night (11 p.m. ET/PT) timeslot in the traditionally ratings-unfriendly summer months, the event fell only slightly behind the 249,000 viewers who tuned in for Strikeforce Challengers 8 in May and the 316,000 viewers who tuned in for Strikeforce Challengers 7 in March during a free-preview weekend of Showtime. The year's only other installment, Strikeforce Challengers 6 in February, drew 189,000 viewers.

Showtime, a premium cable station, boasts about 12 million subscribers and is home to the Strikeforce Challengers series and many of the fight promotion's major shows, which also now air on CBS.

A replay of Strikeforce Challengers 9 airs Tuesday night on Showtime and Showtime 2 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

I created a thread at the SF forum and the UG about Kaufman getting a new nickname, I think she should run with this 'main card' gimmick and go full force

I suggested Sarah 'Main Card' Kaufman, others said Sarah 'Showtime' Kaufman, that has a nice ring to it also

She just was on ESPN's top 10 plays, here ratings did better than the main event, she and SF should play it up, fighters are so bad at marketing themselves, they need to strike when the iron is hot (luke warm) and with a story fans get behind

Such an understatement. 90% of these fighters don't have the first clue how to get over.

I think thats why a lot of guys like to fight for the UFC, they pretty much do it for you and the ones that do there own un top of the UFC hype really get over

If you are outside of the UFC you have to really go for it, thats why guys like Frank were successful, the ones who think they can just fight and make money by winning (besides Fedor) rarely make money

Look at Jake Shields, thats why he always tried to call out Frank, but he didnt know who to do it and sell himself at the same timke, Frank is sitting there fighting Renzo and Baroni and making 300k while guys like Shields are winning titles (in EliteXC) for like 50k

I think 2 of the better technical strikers in MMA are in the womens division

          Kaufman and Vera

Vera has better footwork and combo's, but Kaufman throws a great 1, 2 with head movement, you can see in the pic up top that here head is moving to the side, chin down while she throws the right, thats why she avoided the strike from Roxi, it seems simple but if you watch fights most fighters don't do this, arm punches, haymakers, no head movement with there chin hanging out there is what we normally see

Just watch both of Vera's fights, foot work, movement, combo's, etc...
