This was like when people were bitching that ESPN wasn't covering the SF event, but then CBSSports.com still had pictures of the UFC event and nearly no mention of the SF event.

Like it or not, right now, UFC is synonymous with MMA. Hell, I've brought up MMA with people and they don't get it until I said UFC. I bet if you asked what StrikeForce was to random people on the street, most would says its a comic book.

King Mo is just a DII champ? You dont mention his sucess on the international level?

Does anyone mention Randy Couture's college record? They always say Olympic alternate, etc...
Yes, because the UFC has shoved it down their throats. You think these guys know these things because they follow wrestling? No one follows wrestling and they're only going to mention information that the orgs makes relevant. The UFC sales their fighters, SF doesn't.

& this upcoming event is a perfect example. SF puts on great fights, but tonight's card shows just how much their promotion skills needs to improve. They have an upcoming HW star fighting a nobody and they don't even attempt to tell the public exactly who this guy is. What's his background, what challenges does he present for Lashley? Why will this be a great fight, etc.. Then they wonder why Lashley gets criticized so much and why his following hasn't really increased. As long as they continue to throw him in there with random guys without selling the fight no one will care, they're not GRABBING anyone's interest. They're not adding any sense of intrigue.

Then you have your LHW champion in a big fight against a legit opponent and SF is mum. This is your star, push him. Even if he is the favorite, so what play up Feijao, he still presents some interesting challenges to Mo. Now should any of the favorites lose, anything can happen in MMA, the response from the average fan is going to be "who".

They're not building stars, outside of CBS, selling cards, or selling their fights. The challengers cards have been a ratings disaster, I can post a youtube video shaking my ass and get more views than those things.

We're all MMA fans here, so don't get me wrong, we all want to see SF succeed, the sport needs them to succeed. But, let's just be real and say that they need to seriously step their game up. I don't know wtf SF is doing when they're having females fight twice on one night and try to sign someone without an ounce of MMA experience. They've been making their selves look kinda 2nd league lately.

I agree Mamba, Strikeforce doesnt promote or hype well, 1 reason is because they rely on Showtime to do this, thats how they work, they are a premium channel, its a different animal, so you wont see UFC type hype

but my question is why people who 'know' MMA act the way they do towards Strikeforce and the other shows that are not under the Zuffa banner

Look at the WEC, they do as bad of if not worse than Strikeforce except when they did a PPV, there last show averaged like 315,000 on a channel that is in 80 million homes, Strikeforce always averages that and peaks much higher on a channel that is only in 20 million homes and a pay channel

So why is WEC covered by the MMA media like they are gold?

It depends on what you're comparing the WEC against. The media definitely covers SF CBS and any non-challenger card far better than the typical WEC event, aside from a few of the big title fights. But, again even in the WEC their fighters are made into stars, they tell their stories, and do a great job of explaining to the media and fans what makes some of these guys so special.

I think SF needs to scrap the Challengers series entirely. Start doing more shows, and put the developing talent on the under cards. I understand trying to build these guys, but if no one is watching them, then you're not building them.

Jon Jones was put on GSP vs Penn 2 and exposed to millions, that's how you build a fighter.

The UFC also has more inside access type shows. The had the ones with Rachel Leah where they followed a fighter around for a day, the do preview shows for every event, and the 24/7 thing for the big cards. The show that they're doing for the boxing tournament is the same type of thing that they need for SF.

& more CBS events. As far as that goes tho I think these guys are just using SF, CBS doesn't need MMA. But, Sho is in desperate need of some help in order to keep up with HBO, so they're really just trying to bolster Sho and throwing SF a bone every now and then with CBS.

UFC has been stubborn about controlling their own production. They have let very good looking tv deals with HBO & CBS fall through because they refuse to let someone else produce their product. The slick video packages, the current music, Joe Rogan who the demo relates to, plus everything is fisrt class, state of the art, and up to date..from the graphics to the camera work and everything else, including the pace of the show and the format.

Strikeforce let's Showtime & CBS produce the shows, so you get some 50 year old sports directors vision of MMA.

Another thing that sets UFC apart is the ring walks. They let these guys choose their own music, and the camera follows them from the tunnel to the cage while Rogan has an orgasm telling you how awesome the guy is. Strikeforce has the same generic techno music for everyone, with the same pyro & slow walk down the ramp. Everyone cpmes off generic this way. The two most over guys for the ring walk last night were King Mo & Jacare. Mo did his thing, and Jacare was dancing like a fool and doing his crock chomp gimmick. People ate it up. They sat on their hands for everyone else, who just walked in a straight I a straight line and high fived people.

Like ol school WWF and WCW. WCW's music was always that shitty generic crap. WWF had Jim Johnson creating awesome themes.

But the UFC doesn't always let guys choose their own music. I'm pretty sure Dana White has to approve it and if not, he picks for them.

Yeah, Dana does reject some songs, that's part of keeping his production vision in place. He let's Wandy use his gay techno song, and he let's Cro Cop use the even gayer Wild Boys by Duran Duran, so yhe knows when to back off. Roy Nelson with "Fat" too.
