    Robbie Lawler re-ups with Strikeforce

Middleweight slugger Robbie Lawler re-ups with Strikeforce
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Dec 29, 2010 at 10:10 pm ET
Hard-hitting middleweight slugger Robbie Lawler (18-6 MMA, 2-2 SF) will continue to fight in the Strikeforce cage.

Strikeforce officials today announced that Lawler has signed a new multi-year agreement with the promotion.

"Strikeforce has treated me good, and I am happy to re-sign with them," Lawler stated in today's release. "They have given me an opportunity to fight for the title, and I'm looking forward to that and to fighting any and all of the top 185-pounders."

Lawler is currently scheduled to face Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza at January's "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" event in San Jose, Calif.

A seven-time UFC veteran who has fought professionally since 2001, Lawler debuted for Strikeforce in June 2009 after closing out his three-fight run in the now-defunct EliteXC organization as the promotion's 185-pound champion. Lawler was submitted by current UFC contender Jake Shields in a 182-pound catchweight bout.

Lawler bounced back with a spectacular knockout win over Melvin Manhoef in January 2010 before losing in a unanimous decision to Renato "Babalu" Sobral in a 195-pound catchweight contest.

Nevertheless, Lawler remained undefeated at the 185-pound mark in Strikeforce with a Dec. 4 knockout win over Matt Lindland.

Lawler's contract announcement comes just one day after Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz also re-signed with the California-based promotion.
