Hours away from the New Year, let's make some predictions for 2011. Assuming VSN maintains, we can come back in a year and see which of us got Aoki'd
I'll start with some off the bat...
- UFC will sign an extension with Spike TV. UFC will negotiate with other networks but they don't make much sense. Spike bases their entire being on the UFC relationship and UFC can have shows pretty much whenever they want. ESPN is a possibility but I can't imagine the UFC wanting to take a backseat to baseball, basketball, college basketball, college football and whatever else ESPN would air on Saturday nights.
- Brock Lesnar will fight twice in the UFC. No feeling here other than Brock can't leave so much money on the table. Especially with JDS bitching about wanting to fight, perhaps Lesnar gets back in the gym after the new year, setting up a fight with JDS for Mayish.
- Anderson Silva will lose. Not a HUGE prediction because I think a lot of people will be picking Vitor Belfort, which I plan to do.
- Fabricio Werdum will emerge as the best heavyweight in Strikeforce. Whether or not he fights Fedor again, I think he will fight Overeem at some point and BEAT him, becoming the undisputed king in SF.
- Jose Aldo Jr. will not be featherweight champion by the end of 2011. Whether it's due to a loss inside the cage or due to injury, Aldo will not be the man at 145.
- The Olympians will continue to dominate. Ben Askren, Joe Warren, Daniel Cormier will kick ass and go undefeated in 2011.
- Bellator on MTV2 will top out with a 1.0 rating. Perhaps I'm just a Bellator mark, but I think they'll do okay on MTV2. Whether they will have enough money to continue going...remains to be seen.
And I'll pick the champions of UFC & Strikeforce on the basis of the current champ or the field:
UFC
265: Cain Velasquez
205: Shogun Rua
185: The Field
170: GSP
155: The Field
145: The Field
135: Dominick Cruz
Strikeforce
265: The Field
205: The Field
185: The Field
170: Nick Diaz (I think Woodley can beat Diaz, but I don't think he'll get a shot in 2011, Daley should get the next shot after Cyborg)
155: Gilbert Melendez
