"Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" peaks with more than 850,000 viewers

Strikeforce's first event of 2011 was a hit with Showtime viewers.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed that this past Saturday's "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" event peaked with 853,000 viewers.

Industry sources confirmed that viewership on the premium-cable channel peaked during the evening's main event between Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz and Brazilian slugger Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos.

"Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" took place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Overall, the event averaged 561,000 viewers, which is more than any single Strikeforce event broadcast on Showtime in the past year.

The peak viewership was the second-highest ever earned by a Strikeforce event on Showtime, ranking just behind 2009's female championship fight between Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and Gina Carano, which drew a Strikeforce record 856,000 viewers during the main event and averaged 576,000 viewers for the card.

The ratings for Strikeforce's most recent events include:

576,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" (January 2011)
517,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Miami" (January 2010)
412,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum" (June 2010)
367,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Houston" (August 2010)
350,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2" (October 2010)
341,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II" (December 2010)
308,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery" (May 2010)
164,000 viewers, "Strikeforce: Los Angeles" (June 2010)

Awesome that it peaked for the main event and not the Walker fight, the fans who stayed who normally dont watched 2 good fights after that

Jacare, Lawler, Diaz and Cyborg delivered

Considering that SF seemed to promote this one even less than usual, not bad at all.

I would like to see the quarter hour breakdowns, because i'm somewhat suspicious base on the numbers we have that Diaz drew this rating, not Walker. Diaz has already established himself now as a pretty decent live draw, at least in San Jose.

Walker was everywhere promoting this, his fight had some buzz. I'm shocked at the final number though, and it's great to know that it peaked for the main.

That never worked for the WEC.

Personalities and compelling stories bring viewers.

It doesnt hurt, but it's hardly the most important factor, or even very important at all.

Personalities people care about, in a meh fight, will outrdraw the two no names with no charisma in a fight of the year every time.

Glad to see this. The more successful Strikeforce is, the more MMA I get to see.

I wouldnt say that, but I would say exciting fights keep the viewers

Walker brought them in, Jacare, Lawler, Diaz and Cyborg kept them, the Jacare vs Lawler fight was probably the most important to the rating because it kept the people who turned in for Walker around

If the next fight would have been a Aoki vs Melelndez fight they probably would have stayed like they did
