Heavyweight Shane Del Rosario (11-0 MMA, 3-0 SF) has withdrawn from an upcoming bout with fellow prospect Daniel Cormier (7-0 MMA, 4-0 SF) following a car accident this past week, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today learned from sources close to the event.
A lightweight bout between K.J. Noons (10-3 MMA, 2-1 SF) and Jorge Masvidal (21-6 MMA, 2-0 SF) will likely take its place, according to a separate source.
"Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum" takes place June 18 at American Airlines Center in Dallas and airs live on Showtime.
Details on Del Rosario's accident are scant at this time, but it's believed his injuries are serious enough to keep him from fighting on the card. Calls to Del Rosario and his representatives went unanswered.
The undefeated fighter was fresh off an impressive submission win over Lavar Johnson at "Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Silva." The bout served as a reserve bout in the promotion's heavyweight grand prix.
Del Rosario's bout with Cormier was also billed as a reserve bout. It's unknown at this time whether his injuries will keep him from future tournament vacancies.
Cormier could not be reached for comment.
Noons returns to the cage after falling short in a bid for Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz's belt this past October. The two had met three years prior with Noons emerging victorious as lightweight champion of the now-defunct EliteXC.
Masvidal most recently dispatched up-and-comer Billy Evangelista this past March at "Strikeforce: Columbus." The American Top Team lightweight has hopscotched between wins and losses in his previous four appearances.
