Philly faces a mess of a summer thanks to the cap

Interesting article coming out of philly a couple days ago talking about the cap troubles the team has and what next season looks like.

Thursday, May 12, 2011 Posted: 1:27 p.m. By Tim Panaccio CSNPhilly.com Sean ODonnell and his wife were discussing renovating a beach house they had bought in Southern California as a future retirement home last June when Chris Pronger called. They were teammates in Anaheim in 2007 when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup. Pronger asked ODonnell to delay retirement and…

Looking at capgeek they have 18 players signed for next season but have a cap space of just .430k with UFA/RFA's being Zherdev, Carcillo, Nodl, Leino (who already turned down a 3mil a year deal back in feb apparantly), powe, odonnell, boynton and boucher.

This is like chicago last year and most people think Carter is going to be a goner.

Carter signed one of those monster deals though did he not? ROFL at trading away an 11 year contract that will be difficult.

Personally I hope the club falls apart. Wankers.

Won't be terribly difficult to teams that could affoard and use his service.

I'm sure teams like the Predators, Blue Jackets, Panthers ect would gladly trade away a few picks to get him.

It's probably a complete no-trade clause as well which makes things difficult if it so. ROFL. Enjoy the bottom of the Atlantic ya dirty cunts.

Carter doesn't have any NTC I don't think.

Preds have needed that offensive talent since Radulov left for the KHL. He would be a huge acquisition for them.

Besides all the high salaries, this year proved that the Flyers need help in net. They will have to trade away some pieces, and hope to acquire at least an above average goaltender at some point this off-season, whether it is via trade or free agency.

I wouldn't want to be in Paul Holmgren's shoes right about now.

The cap is supposed to go up 3 million dollars this offseason. If that happens they could trade somelike Hartnell and have money to get a decent goalie and resign Leino, we'll see what happens. But the Flyers will be able to keep most of it's core with Giroux, Briere, JVR, Richards, Carter, Pronger, Timonen, Bob.

PLEASE trade Carter, I can't stand the way he plays the game. I'd like to see Zherdev back but with the way Laviolette used him I doubt he'll be back.

                          Carter's gone way before Richards.

This is nothing like the Hawks. The Hawks had to get rid of pretty much every player instrumental in their success, besides the stars. We still get to keep guys like Hartnell, JVR, etc who aren't stars (yet, in JVR's case).

All we're losing are some key role players, besides Leino who I'd be really upset to see leave. I'd rather have Leino than Hartnell or Carter, as would any other Flyers fan.

I don't care whether or not Zherdev comes back. I don't think I'll ever accept a Russian as a true Flyer who isn't named Bob.

Bouch can walk. Even though I'd rather see Leights walk, have a nice life.

When you have five defencemen making more than $3.2M cap hit and a bottom 6 forward making $4.2M, you know you have financial issues.
And while I like Kimmo Timmonen, no chance he's worth a $6.33M cap hit.
Briere's deal is obviously problematic, but Richards' and Carter's deals are palatable.

The Flyers will need to pull off some neat tricks this off-season.

Here's a thought: Offer Montreal Briere for Scott Gomez, then bury Gomez in the minors ... something Philly might be willing to do financially, but obviously Montreal wouldn't.

Are you just looking at ages? Timmonen is one of the locker room leaders. He's worth the cap hit. He's also still a solid D man, especially with Prongers career on the downshoot. I'm not trying to trade Kimmo for a 3rd rounder. LOL. Pleaseeee stay. And Briere? I think he'll end his career a Flyer. Our city likes him wayyyyy too much.
