It's official - Averno to WWE

(Credit to the infamous cubsfan of f4w/wo community, and luchawiki. He's the lucha expert with all the sources who breaks most of the big stories out of Mexico.)

    Here's how it went down...

A few weeks ago, when it was clear he was in danger of bombing at a level of epic proportions, they asked Sin Cara to pick anyone in the world who he thought he could shine with. He picked Averno, and the WWE immediately got the deal done.

The Averno vs La Mascara mask vs. mask match on June 17 was indeed supposed to be the Averno blowoff, but now CMLL is pissed the story has leaked (they have known for weeks he was leaving), so they may change the booking so as not t9o be predictable, plus they dont want to do the big payoff to Averno because they think he leaked it. Averno is coming into the WWE as an unmasked heel, which is why he is so hastily offering up his mask.

If CMLL backs out of the payoff, Averno will sell his mask to the highest bidder on the indy circuit. In theory, there is nothing stopping him from showing up in AAA and losing his mask to a big AAA star, because there is nothing CMLL can do about it now.

As I said yesterday, he's a fool for dropping the mask. The odds on him having a long successful US run are slim. He'll put over Sin Cara and probably end up cut. Then what? His bridge will be burnt with CMLL and he will no longer have his mask. I hope for his sake he isnt one of those guys who is really ugly or old looking who loses all charisma unmasked.

      Mistico vs. Averno Highlights

If you recall, Averno was Mistico's hand picked opponent when he tourned New Japan last year as well. They do have good chemistry, and Averno is a solid veteran. I'm leery about him without the mask. Personally, I think Volador is Mistico's best opponent and has a better WWE body, but clearly they want Mistico to be as comfortable as possible so Averno it is.

No doubt it is a sizable risk for Averno to drop the mask and head to WWE with no guarantees other than working with Mistico probably immediately.

Has he always worked with the mask?

Why would he have to lose it in Mexico? Can't he just leave CMLL without dropping it, and show up in WWE without the mask? Or regardless, would that still hurt him if he should ever return to CMLL? I know he gets a payday for dropping the mask, but that must be pretty short term thinking.

It's a good sign WWE really does have a lot invested in Mistico to the point they ask him who they should bring in for him to work with.

Figure it'll be easy initially for Averno to get over by attacking him. Whether he can get over with his looks or promos (does he speak English?) will be important (as that's how ADR got over).

From what I've read, the two are friends so hopefully together they can inject some life into Sin Cara.

From a style standpoint, it will be interesting to see what they're allowed to do. Obviously, I don't expect them to do a full on lucha match, but no doubt it's what will be most comfortable for them.

I think at this point, they need to let Sin Cara work whatever kind of match he is most at ease with. Why bring in a good, comfortable opponent, and then force them to work out of their element? They should allow them to do what they do best and let Sin Cara shine.

I dont think Averno speaks english.

He doesnt have to lose the mask in Mexico, but since WWE plans to use him unmasked, he is kind of under the gun to get the payoff while he can. When Bischoff unmasked Misterio and Psicosis and Juvy and all of the WCW guys, they all tried to go back to Mexico and work with the hoods and the athletic commissions wouldnt let them. So if Averno wants the big payoff, he needs to do it now or risk maybe never getting it. This is why I think its a mistake. I dont think he will have a long shelf life in the WWE (especially if he's old looking or ugly, because he doesnt have a great body). Worst case scenerio is he gets a few PPV payoffs and if he's lucky gets into the next video game or whatever. Will that be worth more long term than sticking it out in CMLL as a top guy, and eventually getting a monster mask payoff a decade from now? I dont know. I suppose its worth the risk, but history shows that the odds are stacked against you in the WWE if you are foreign.

            I feel bad for Mistico.

I dont blame him one bit for skipping FCW, because how many guys would swallow their ego and go from the #1 star on the planet to developmental? You can say Danielson, who they werent going to send but he volunteered because he thought he was rusty, but he was never any kind of draw or star beyond a tiny indy level. Asking Mistico to go to FCW would be like NOAH signing Cena and starting him off on SEM shows in front of 100 people in tiny villages.

But now, there has to be tremendous pressure to produce when his boy shows up. Its not like if the matches stink or he fails to get over, that they are going to say, "Ok, who else can you work with?".

For that reason alone, I cant wait for Averno to show up. This whole situation is facinating to me.

              From Meltzer, citing Super Luchas

Super Luchas reported on their cover today that Averno will be signing with WWE and most likely dropping his mask to La Mascara at CMLL's next big show on June 17th.

The story claims that he had a tryout match with WWE last fall and did well, but WWE was concerned about his age. However, Sin Cara isn't getting over like they thought he would feuding with guys like Chavo Guerrero Sr., and so the idea is they need to bring in someone who can work his style and showcase his strengths, which Averno can do.

The story claims WWE is looking at two other young CMLL luchadors as well.

More on this story throughout the week.
Interesting since cubsfan made it a point to say WWE is not raiding talent, but wrote it to sound like just a one time deal.

If they really are looking at "two young luchadors," I wonder who and what kind of role they have in mind.

Do you think Chavo Guerrero Jr. even realizes the effect of him being such a terrible wrestler/person has had on the Lucha Libre scene?

If Super Luchas is accurate, i'd be willing to bet its Volador and La Sombra.

If you've never seen Averno, look no further than his ring entrance as to why the WWE will be changing his gimmick.
