Victor Ortiz. WTF?
Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s long-awaited return to the boxing ring was confirmed Tuesday when he tweeted that he will fight welterweight Victor Ortiz on Sept. 17.
"My fans have been waiting long enough. Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz. Sept 17, 2011 for the WBC world championship," Mayweather said on Twitter.
An official announcement is expected sometime Tuesday, according to the LA Times.
The undefeated boxer, 34, has not fought since May 2010 when he scored a convincing unanimous decision over Shane Mosley.
For the past few years boxing fans have clamored for Mayweather to face Manny Pacquiao in a match to settle the debate over the sport's best pound-for-pound fighter. Several rounds of negotiations to set up the fight have been unsuccessful.
Mayweather's assistant trainer, Nate Jones, told the LA Times recently that Mayweather would fight Ortiz in 2011 to set up a final fight of his career against Pacquiao sometime in 2012.
Ortiz, 24, won the WBC welterweight title in April in a unanimous decision over Andre Berto. He has an overall record of 29 wins, two losses and two draws, with 22 wins by knockout.
Mayweather still faces several legal battles, including felony charges for a domestic violence incident last September involving the mother of three of his children. The next hearing in the case is not until October.
Mayweather is also facing several misdemeanor charges for two separate confrontations last year with private security guards near his Las Vegas mansion. Both incidents were triggered by illegally-parked cars outside Mayweather's house
