Nick Diaz vacates Strikeforce WW Title, UFC-only fighter

Business as usual. A shame they didn't try to unify the titles.

When Nick Diaz travels to the UFC on Oct 27 to face Georges St-Pierre, he will do so without the Strikeforce welterweight title.

According to UFC President Dana White, Nick Diaz is now a UFC fighter and has vacated his Strikeforce welterweight belt to get a shot at UFC champion Georges St-Pierre.

White stated that Diaz could go back to Strikeforce at some point in the future if he chose, but for now he is strictly a UFC fighter.

As for the Strikeforce welterweight belt, White said that two fighters from that organization will fight later this year to determine a new champion.

No decisions have been made at this time regarding who will fight for the belt or when that fight will take place.

At the top of the Strikeforce welterweight division right now the two names that would likely first pop to mind would be the last title contender in the weight class, Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley, and former Missouri wrestler Tyron Woodley.

There is also a pivotal welterweight match coming up in July between Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos and Tarec Saffiedine that could play a role in determining one of the top contenders.

Diaz will face St-Pierre in the main event of UFC 137 on Oct 27 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas with the UFC welterweight title on the line.

Why unify it when they have no intention of completely removing 170ers from SF?

Cmon man. SF won't even exist in two years.

No doubt, but they apparently have no intention of bringing Woodley, Cyborg, Saffeidine, whoever the hell else they have at 170 over to the UFC right now.

Of course not, they still need to run shows.

But they don't need titles. Title for title could have been a great marketing gimmick. Dropped ball.

I'd probably agree but the SF title isn't about to add 200k extra buys. Diaz is already something of a draw and they have his great highlight reel. Plus, between Cesar Gracie, Shields, Gilbert and both Diaz's, the promos should be out of this world good.
