The deadline is today to vote on legislative issues for the NY State Senate and Assembly. The MMA bill passed in the Senate about a month ago, but it's DOA with the Assembly.
It passed through some committees but it stalled in the Ways and Means committee, which is exactly what happened last year.
After today, the legislative calendar does not resume until January and the whole process begins again from scratch.
:obama:
The UFC has talked about how the Unions are against legalization because of whatever the fuck has gone on in the Station Casino's in Vegas (the Fertitta's empire).
Meanwhile, there are a mix of NY representatives who have talked/written about how they'll never vote for the bill. There's others who are coming along but for whatever reason, there hasn't been enough support.
There are still people who are just turned off because of the violence and don't listen to reason (you know, the fact that underground MMA fights do happen and those who participate have no medical help and the state gets ZERO MONEY from it). Studies have found that legalizing MMA would help bring in $20-$30 million for major UFC shows held throughout the state (NYC, Long Island, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, perhaps Brooklyn in the future and who knows where else).
