Wisniewski signs six year, $33 million with Columbus

James Wisniewski has been signed to a six-year $33 million deal by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Wisniewski's rights had been traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Blue Jackets on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft pick that now turns into a fifth rounder with the completion of the deal.

Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is pleased with the addition to his defensive corps.

"James is a player we identified very early on and we are thrilled to have him," said Howson. "He brings offensive skill and grit to our blue-line, character to our dressing room and will be a key contributor to our hockey club."

Wisniewski set career-highs in goals (10) and assists (41) in 75 games last year splitting time between the Islanders and Canadiens.

Acquired just before the new year for a second-round draft pick in 2011 and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2012 from the Islanders, Wisniewski was the Canadiens' highest scoring defenceman and finished just six points behind the team's leading scorer Tomas Plekanec.

Wisniewski is coming off a one-year, $3.25 million deal he signed with the Islanders last summer after the team acquired his rights from Anaheim for a third-round draft pick.

Wisniewski missed two games last season due to suspension after making an obscene gesture to Rangers' forward Sean Avery.

The 27-year-old American defender has played 329 games over parts of six NHL seasons for Anaheim, Chicago, the Islanders and Montreal tallying 27 goals and 121 assists.

I know that Columbus is retooling but this is a deal I think could come back to bite them. At the very least, they are signing him in his prime and he will be 33 when the deal is done.
