Basically, a Designated Player designation is a partial exemption from the salary cap. Each team gets two designations. A designated player has $335k/year of their salary count against the cap (which means its actually paid by the league) and the rest of the player's contract amount is paid by the club owner. A club can purchase an addition designation. Its basically what allows the MLS to maintain its centralized structure and salary cap but able to pay star players what is required to attract them.Comment
