Edge is just an interesting character. He went from a guy who ran through the crowd and didn't speak and was over, to being in a tag team who was over mostly for their mic work. He's really versatile. He can get a good match out of Cena, he held his own in the ring against Guerrero or Angle or Benoit, then he can take the hardcore bumps in all the matches with the Hardys.

Just looking at the list Larry put up, post-surgery, and it couldn't be more all over the place. Rey, RVD, Cena, Taker, Orton. It doesn't matter if they work a slow plodding style, a high-flying style, they're mat-based like Benoit or Angle, or a hardcore style like Foley. You can drop him in with anybody, and he can work that style and make the match entertaining if not great. He's not the Albert Pujols, one of the greatest ever types. But he's very Craig Biggio. There's something to be said for being above average at everything and doing the small things. Constantly very good, rarely great.

Oh yeah, the first Rated R run was definitely the high point of his career. Cena kinda took away from it though, because that was the height of people being burned out on Cena. They were building up monsters every month for him to run through (Khali, Umaga, etc). And then when he won the belt, people were so happy to have it off Cena that it made him a cool heel almost off the bat.

But he really carved himself a niche with his mic work then. He wasn't the cookie-cutter face he was pre-injury, he wasn't geeking out with Christian, he was a legitimate singles star with a good persona. I couldn't STAND the WWE at that point in time, and the only reason I watched Raw was to see Edge. Of course, the WWE didn't want him upstaging Cena for long, so that didn't last. And he eventually ended up on Smackdown with that god-awful Ultimate Opportunist shtick and winded down his career. But his 06-ish run was his most inspired work on the mic to date, by a very good margin.

Edge became a legit star in the eyes of WWE people because when they threw the curveball and gave him the belt in January 2006, ratings actually went up. New people were watching because of the switch but like you said, the plan all along was to have the belt on Cena so they went according to that.

God damn Edge was awesome as a heel during that period tho.

Like I said, I think after seeing that compilation, I very much underrated him throughout his career.

Austin Aries’ contract is expiring in a few weeks and TNA hasn’t been as on the ball about getting him to sign before it expires. You would think the history of wrestling would teach people lessons about contracts of existing champions expiring without getting a new deal done, not that it necessarily means anything in this case, but it’s a general rule to go by.

Does anybody have a single doubt that TNA will probably let this guy walk? Despite the fact he got over largely on his own and might be the hottest act in the company?
