Sweet article from one of the guys on Voices of Wrestling, Steve Virglio looking at WCW Saturday Night from January 2000.

It was January 2000, and it was the start of a pivotal year for WCW. After this year, business would never be the same for the company as guys like Vince Russo, Eric Bischoff, and others assumed control of the on-air product. The Nitro preceding this episode of Saturday Night saw Terry Funk named WCW commissioner and he immediately appointed Arn Anderson as WCW’s enforcer to deal with the New World Order.

Yeah, two old guys are going to try and control several somewhat younger guys with weapons. Not to mention, this lasted all of a couple weeks, along with the new New World Order. Arn Anderson ended up kidnapped and in the back of the nWo’s car and subsequently was tortured for three days until WCW Thunder. Yes, the announcers indicated he had been tortured the whole time. Also, DDP and Buff Bagwell were mad at each other because DDP thought Buff was trying to hook-up with his wife. WCW was headed into Souled Out with a bunch of lame gimmick matches and dream bouts such as David Flair v. Vampiro. This is the January 8th Saturday Night show, taped January 5th in Rock Hill, SC.

We’ve got a new look for Saturday Night after an apparent few week break along with a danceclub intro. Scott Hudson and Mike Tenay are the announcers. Hudson started off by saying that if the next 51 weeks in WCW are anything like the the first then we are in for a doozy. Who’d have thought Scott Hudson could be so wise?

- No "Goldberg" chants for Ryback tonight; if you could hear some on TV, they were piped in, because I was waiting for it and it never came. He was way over in Montreal - people were chanting "Feed Me More" without provocation.

The delivery of the promo was solid...the content, on Cena's side, just like The Rock feud, and the brief Lesnar feud...he just shits on everything, doesn't sell anything, and buries everything about the guy. Its the little things, the subtle things...but its fucking awful. As soon as he started trashing Punk's homage to the great's, I tuned out, because it was crap and another cheap way to bury the other guy.

Cena has been doing it for the long time during his promos. It becomes more obvious with each one.

Yeah, but if Cena goes out and says he respects Punk, it's the same Cena shit all over again. It doesn't bury Punk, that is a terribly over-used word. It's a jab after his whole Punk has changed when he hasn't done that either. But he's a heel. To paraphrase Zapp Brannigan, he stands for everything we don't stand for. Boo Punk when he uses the flying elbow, because he stole it from Macho Man and he's a bad guy. Mr. Fuji didn't hate America either...probably. When you're talking about such a hard-line kiddie promotion as the WWE, anything bad said about the heels is good and gets them over as bad guys. The older fans are going to be too smart for it and eat Punk up regardless anyway. So what difference does it make? Again, I hate Cena, but it seems like he's damned either way. I don't like any Cena feuds because he takes away from them the minute he comes in the ring, running and smiling and yelling with his cartoon ass making it seem like less of a wrestling feud and more of a high school play. His promo Monday, while entirely too long to the point of me changing back to that shitty MNF game for a couple, went over at the end. Fans behind him, fans against Punk, and me not totally disgusted with him/WWE for once. Punk doesn't lose shit in the long run, as WWE fans don't remember anything older than 3 months so no harm no foul.

Hearing whispers from more than one place that Samuray Del Sol could be headed to AAA full time to take over the Octagon or Pentagon gimmick.

This would be quite the blow for DGUSA/EVOLVE. El Generico has really helped get Samuray over as an indie scene "made guy".

--Edge was at last night's WWE show in Ottawa because one of his students, Leah Von Dutch, was getting a backstage tryout. There were five wrestlers getting tryouts. Notable is that William Regal, who is on of the men in charge of the tryouts, stressed that the company is now looking for ROH style wrestlers, which is different from the previous mindset.

Seriously, are they finally coming around on the idea that talented indie wrestlers, who love what they do and have a dream, are easier to teach and work with and motivate than models and ex-football players and bodybuilders looking for exposure and chasing cash? Brilliant.

Someone has just tweeted me about something that I’m supposed to have said over the last two days while spending time and giving invaluable advise to wrestlers who come to be looked at by the WWE. I know I’m old and my standards are different to most but it really sickens me that someone out of the five people I saw this week would do that. Whats more appalling to me is that I never actually said what was quoted and so it shows that they weren’t even listening. Such a shame.

On the bright side, Cabana had Regal on for his Podcast, 2 episodes worth. Should be awesome.

This was near the start of WCW's total trash era of the 99-01 years. Dustin Rhodes returns with vignettes that are supposed to be of a scary heel that comes off as him being a legitimately disturbing child molester. Pulled almost immediately. Great nostalgia reference, Fed.

WWE.com has posted an interview with WWE Hall of Famer and baseball great Pete Rose. During the interview, Rose discussed his multiple beatings at the hands of Kane, and offered this advice to Daniel Bryan: “Daniel, don’t cross Kane! Do everything you can to make Kane channel his anger at your opponents and win the titles. Hopefully, that will keep that monster from unleashing his anger on you.”

It would appear that Rosa Mendes is too risqué for WWE’s new kid-friendly program on The CW,Saturday Morning Slam. The sultry manager was nowhere to be found on this morning’s show when her men, Primo and Epico, took on Kofi Kingston and R-Truth in a tag team match.
The show is rated TV-G, a level lower than WWE’s general TV-PG rating. Due to the program being aimed specifically at children, it does not feature any moves or holds aimed at the neck due to what is seen as their violent nature.

Former TNA Wrestling stars Devon and Jesse Neal teased joining WWE as a tandem during a discussion on Twitter Saturday.
Devon wrote, “@TheJesseNeal 6 days a week … got to get ready …. you know something , i think you and i could be a tag team . i think it will work… now we do it together and the world would be ours.”
Jesse responded, “that definitely sounds like a plan. Just on a bigger stage…….”

Forget Matt Morgan jumping to ROH with his buddy Cornette. Looks like he re upped with TNA because he showed up at a house show and jumped Robbie E.

Morgan should be a monster in TNA. I never got what was so hard about that. His size sticks out, and he's not garbage like Gunner or Crimson. He can play cocky pretty well. Push him as a monster heel who runs through the roster because he's physically superior. If WWE can save gigantic sacks of crap like Kane and Mark Henry with an extended push, I don't know why they can't legitimize Morgan for a year or so...
