Having the Shield as an insurance policy (explicitly stated or not) is just gravy on top of Ryback getting worked tonight.

The whole "Does Maddox have a job or not?" thing rolls with anything else on TV... if you're on Vince's payroll and on TV, you can be in anything as long as the script for the night allows it.

Maddox could be the goddamn champ after tonight if McMahon willed it.
