Dana detests rankings, but at some point, as the sport grows, they will have to institute some sort of mandatory title defense system. They have this in boxing, but it doesn't work because nobody cares about the titles. Titles still matter in MMA, so setting up rankings and having mandatory title defenses is the way to go. If not, as the money and the egos grow, you will see more and more fighters like Silva refusing fights and picking their own spots. You can't force guys to fight each other, but you can strip them of titles and thus hurt their spot on the card and ultimately, earning potential.
