    Mike Green has gone on IR because of a groin problem which he has acknowledged is probably a chronic issue which will recur throughout his career.

    Green is currently paid $5.25m and is an RFA after this season (I would imagine he is in the RFA group with most arbitration rights).

    Here is a guy who has two point-per-game seasons and two Norris Trophy nominations. Has an insanely good slap and wrist shot and is a master of the powerplay. He also holds a defenceman record with goals in eight consecutive games. In the playoffs he has 36GP-5G-20A-25PTS.

    On the otherhand he has played one full NHL season out of five. Last year he played in just 49 games and this year he will miss another significant chunk of time. In the playoffs Green almost always seems to be carrying an injury.

    What should Washington do this off-season?

      trade him for a better defender, they have enough talent to score upfront but giving up 3gpg isn't good enough to win in the East.

              I say keep him.

              Primarily because he is an awesome player. His offensive ability is basically unique for a defenceman in today's NHL. Put him with four second line players and they'd still have a top 15 powerplay.

              And secondly, because no one is going to offer them anything substantial. I can't think of a trade which would equally benefit both teams.

                  Washington's issue run deeper than Mike Green and trading him isn't going to make them a Stanley Cup team. In some regards, it starts and ends with Ovey. He just doesn't seem to have the passion he had for the game, and he is no where near the force he has. Latest issue of The Hockey News he was called one of the most overrated players in todays game. That is huge considering a couple years ago he was the best player.

                  Green is that offensive power the caps need from the blue line. Every team needs a power play guy like that. Players get hurt, and it may be because he plays to much for what his skill requires.
                  All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.

                  The NHL series is a giver, Madden takes the load.

                      Green is an interesting player. There hasn't been an offensively gifted defenseman in some time that can match up with him. A lot of people say he's terrible defensively, but one of the things I like about Green is that he knows his defensive abilities are what he needs to work on. Each season, it looks like he slowly becomes better in some aspect, but recently, the injuries have hurt that development.

                      I can't imagine that the Capitals will bring back Semin next season, so that frees up $6 million in cap space. Green may or may not get a raise from his $5 million plus deal. Regardless, I don't think Green is going to get a huge extension- I think a one or two year deal is the max the Capitals will give him. I don't want this to be a situation that the Habs are in with Andrei Markov- if it is time to move on, whether due to performance or injury, then we need to move on.

                      He won't be traded- the Caps won't get a good return on him. The next question is definitely how much the team wants to commit to Green.
