Bolton's Muamba collapses; FA game called off

Tottenham's FA Cup quarter-final against Bolton has been abandoned by referee Howard Webb just before half-time after Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba suddenly collapsed and had to be carried off on a stretcher.

With the game at 1-1, Muamba collapsed near the half-way line and play was suspended after 41 minutes.

Amid worrying scenes, six paramedics raced across the pitch and appeared to try to resuscitate the England Under-21 international.

Tottenham later confirmed the match was abandoned.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle also joined the paramedics as they tended to Muamba and players from both sides looked visibly upset as the midfielder received treatment.

Muamba, 23, was carried off on a stretcher after receiving six minutes of treatment.

He was wearing an oxygen mask and was flanked by a number of paramedics and Bolton medical staff as he left the pitch.

Both sets of fans sang Muamba's name as he lay on the pitch at the north London ground.

The announcement that the game had been called off was greeted with a round of applause from both ends.

Bolton are expected to give an update on Muamba's condition later this evening.

Watching it live, I thought he just had a knee issue. But then as Gallas tried to get some help on the field quickly I thought that it had to be bad. So I walked away and came back to realize it was way worse. Fuckin nuts, only 23.

yeah he is stable but "Muamba is "critically ill" in the London Chest Hospital. Bolton has confirmed this; representatives from Bolton and Tottenham are on scene."

UPDATE: We can tell you that club captain Kevin Davies has told the BBC that Muamba is "showing real fight."

Hope he pulls through, only 23 and with a son

I was watching the international feed, so I just got a quick glimpse of him on the ground. It was pretty clear right as they cut away and stopped showing any closeup this was more serious than normal. Was devastating seeing the crowd crying and knowing what was happening. The fact that he's still a live is amazing to me, still a long week ahead though, I can only imagine what his family (and son) are going through right now. I doubt we see him play again, but that's the least of my concerns. Good luck to him.

Even more astounding when his heart was fully stopped and he had no oxygen going to his brain for 6 minutes.

Usually a one way ticket to becoming a vegetable when that happens, so to be able to speak and control limbs seems to point to managing to avoid catastrophic brain damage.

Fabrice Muamba is to be fitted with a special defibrillator pacemaker in case he suffers another cardiac arrest. The Bolton midfielder is expected to undergo the minor procedure before he leaves hospital.
