Rangers & Devils Bloody Brawl Starts Game

Worse boxing here than in MMA

Can someone explain what this is about? I know the Devils loathe the Rangers, but 3 fights kick off the game in unison?

I could do without this fighting, though.

There are in seats facing a gigantic ice rink.

What else were they going to watch?

Sorry haters, this was not a pointless staged fight. The Devils put out 3 guys who wanted to fight on the opening faceoff, and the Rangers obliged. As Pierre Macguire was saying, Tortorella was pissed off at the Devils coach for doing it because it was a straight up challenge to our toughness on home ice. The response from the Rangers electrified MSG and we Rangers carried the play entirely for the next 20 minutes.

I guess Tortorella forgot about the last time you guys met in NJ.

"I guess in John's world you can come into our building and start your tough guys, but we can't do the same in here. He's either got short-term memory loss or he's a hypocrite. So it's one or the other," DeBoer said.

Who cares? I didn't say DeBoer was right or wrong, I just said he put those guys out to start to try to help his team and the Rangers responded that way because we identify ourselves as the toughest team in the league and thrive off of it. The Red Wings or Canucks could have responded to the Devils with their Euros and not batted an eyelid, but our team has a different view of how to play hockey between the whistles.

                    Cool.

Devils forward Patrik Elias also credited the fights for helping the Rangers strike first, but he looked at it more as causing a tactical mistake leading up to the goal.

With the puck deep in the Rangers zone, Elias tried to lay a big hit on Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. Elias connected, but Callahan's break-out pass sprung Stepan on the 4-on-2 that led to the goal.

"I was excited to play tonight -- maybe too much," Elias said. "The next shift after (the fights), instead of playing it smart position-wise, I'm going to go and run after their guy to finish a check and get involved physically and that gave them a 4-on-2 up the ice and cost us a goal. Sometimes, yeah, it's great to see that and emotions are high, but you have to kind of take a deep breath and a step back and play the way you want to play."

Clearly pumped that guy up, especially pronounced since Patrick Elias is the opposite of a finish your check at all times kind of player.

Yeah Toronto looked really pumped up scoring that goal when the goalie fell over.
