How WWE’s Overbooking Has Made Punk/Jericho Depressingly Boring

How did we get to this point? How is the feud between two of the best talkers in World Wrestling Entertainment history so painfully boring? Overbooking. The feud between Chris Jericho andVSDCM PunkVSDwill c ulminate this Sunday at Extreme Rules. After a good, but mildly disappointing WrestleMania matchup between the two, all eyes are on

The straight edge gimmick is a heel gimmick. Falls a little flat with a babyface.

          Bingo.

And it was a heel gimmick... like 11 months ago.

Maybe because the WWE is so stale and without good programs...I kind of dig Punk/Jericho.

Maybe you guys can help me out, as I missed the unification of all of the major belts and doing away with most of the minor ones. But it seems to me that the focus is not even on the championships any more. You have Punk and Jericho line angling for the WWE championship, but that isn't the main thing they are pushing. Instead, it's been Cena and The Rock, and Cena and Lesnar. Perhaps that is a problem, because its almost like these guys are just running their mouths if it isn't for a title.

Titles ceased being the focus many years ago and have been devalued to the point that it would take massive effort to rebuild them and use them to effectively draw money, because an entire generation (you could argue two generations) of wrestling fans has been taught that they don't mean much.

Forget titles. It's gotten to the point that wins & losses no longer matter, either. At least not in the way they did before.

By devaluing titles and wins/losses, they have made things far more difficult in terms of the ability to draw money. But with all of the new modern revenue streams, promoters are relying on old school money drawing techniques less & less. In the old days, logical storytelling and building around the importance of titles meant everything. So it cuts both ways. The booking is bad because they can get away with it. Things are different in Japan and the indie scene, where good booking is still vital, but still increasingly rare.

tl;dr - Titles dont mean shit anymore, and probably never will again.

That is a good point. Though when I stopped watching, literally all of the promos happened when the champ paraded around with the belt, and then get challenged by someone for it. For the WWF championship, it was already going to PPV title defenses.

I think a good start at having the titles mean something is actually following through with The Rock winning the WWE championship at some point, and also bringing back the Hardcore Championship and the 24/7 rule. I remember hearing about a year or so ago that it might return.

I am trying my best to get interested in WWE again, but god damn did things change.

Just bring back the TV Title like TNA's doing.

The champ's gotta defend and it makes the belt mean something the more times the current title holder beats everyone else.

Now if they fuck around and hotshot that shit like David Arquette came out of retirement, then certainly don't.

On-topic: (I haven't watched WWE-brand wrestling in 2 weeks so if this already happened, sue me...)

Finish this feud with a "Best in the World" match.

Basically an "I Quit" match but the loser has to say, loud and proud, that the winner is truly the "Best in the World."

Also, add the stip that if Punk loses, he has to take a drink of booze on top of losing the belt.
