Memphis television station WREG spoke to Jerry Lawler's son Kevin today, who revealed that his father is sounding like his regular self and doctors told Lawler there is "no reason why" he can't get back in the ring and wrestle at age 62.

Good to see him recovering so well from his surgery. He's lucky to have had access to emergency medical care so quickly and I hope he doesn't get back in the ring. He's a great presence at ringside behind the mic, no need to risk his life again.

Because this is wrestling, I would not bet against Lawler wrestling at some point again, but if there is one 'legend' type who wouldn't, it would be him.

Old wrestlers keep going primarily for two reasons. One, they need the money (Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, any number of 80's stars working your local VFW Hall this weekend), or two, they need the adrenaline rush of hearing a crowd pop and they love the business (Terry Funk).

Lawler certainly does not need the money. Multi millionaire many times over, and wealthy before he ever took a check from Vince McMahon. Makes a shit ton of money to announce matches, and because he's been doing it for 20 years, he gets residuals from nearly every single DVD that the WWE has ever produced.

As for #2, Lawler has always taken indie bookings, but he is not somebody who grew up as a fan and has any sort of love for wrestling. He fell into the business, and always saw it as just that - business. When people ask him about old classic Memphis angles and matches, he barely remembers any of that stuff, because to him it was just make your money and move on to the next angle. He touched on that in his book about ten years ago. He never thought about any of the matches he had in a historical sense, he just sees wrestling as a means to make money and nothing more. He made no effort to hold on to memories of things like that. Wrestling "purists" hated the Memphis territory in his day for the silly angles and characters, and repetitive stories (monster heel kills jobbers, beats Lawler for title, Lawler wins it back in the rematch at the sold out Mid South Colosseum, bring in new monster heel, rinse repeat). He's not a guy who thinks wrestling is anything more that business.

I get the sense that if he feels like wrestling is dangerous, he won't do it. He doesn't need the money, and I don't think he particularly cares about nostalgia pops or keeping his legacy alive or wrestling because he loves to do it. I could be wrong, it's just the feel I get from him.

How big of a shit-storm is WWE in if Lawler dies (or, more accurately, stays dead) on live TV in front of thousands of people (mostly kids) when Vince has a lockerroom full of not 60+ year old wrestlers who he can't fit on TV as it is. As it stands now, it's nothing short of miraculous that he had that when/where he did. But if he died Monday, it would likely go down as one of the most unnecessary deaths in wrestling history. And a big PR hit to a family-friendly, advertiser-friendly, mainstream promotion. However right or wrong, I think they would have taken a big hit.

If he wrestles again, I'll be of the mind that the surgeons gave him a labotomy after clearing his blockage.

Nah sapp...it's not like Lawler only wrestles for them. He could have had the heart attack over the weekend in Aruba. Thankfully he did not.

WWE PR would have taken a hit, but how are they suppose to know his heart just gives out? He undergoes wellness testing so there was no warning signs, we're led to believe.

Remember, one of their popular wrestlers committed a double murder/suicide and they're no worse off as a company. For fuck sake, they're in bed with Mattel.

Yeah, but indies have brought a half-dead Scott Hall in too. WWE is held to a higher standard. To the general public, the facts are that WWE has a 62-year old man wrestling for them who keels over almost immediately after a match that most logical people don't think he should really be out there for.

WWE took a huge hit for Benoit too. That was a major shit-storm at the time, and got them tons of negative press from mainstream outlets.

I always assumed Lawler would have a heart attack while with an 18-year-old woman, not while announcing. Go figure.

I dont get why people are making a big deal out of the fact that he wrestled that night. He had a 98% blockage, his heart attack was going to happen very soon whether he wrestled or not that night. It would have looked bad on the surface, but shit happens.

There's still signs of it. I believe he had three blockages right? My father had the same thing, but he never said anything or complained, and he ran five miles three times a week and is probably in as good a shape as anyone. My step-mother actually noticed he was lagging behind her while going up the concourse at a Redskins game, and told him to go check it out. He went from the doctors, to the hospital and then to a specialized hospital over the period of a couple days. Lawler probably felt nothing of it, brushed it off to just the motions of working his industry, as did everyone else more than likely.

Not blaming anyone really, but hopefully some people in the locker room take this as a warning sign and are more proactive about watching for a similar situation.
