This is not chicken or egg. Neither exists without the owners.Comment

It wasn't immediately clear how willing the league is to negotiate off its latest offer. The NHL's previous proposal called for the players' revenue share to fall to 47 per cent and tabled a number of restrictive rules governing contracts.
According to a source, the only one that remains in Tuesday's proposal is a maximum contract length of five years. The new offer also calls for unrestricted free agency to come into effect at age 28 or after eight years of service -- one year later than the last CBA -- and keeps entry-level deals at three years.
So at the end of the day, compared to the last deal, the union loses 7% of revenue, long term contracts (which pretty much everybody concedes have spiraled out of control and are ultimately bad for the health of the sport), and would have to accept one additional year of team control before free agency.
Looks to me like the league is leaving the union some room to counter, namely the added year of team control. The union should counter with age 27, seven year free agency, and maybe add some years to the max deals. The league would probably take that.
The bottom line, is you will not convince the league to keep allowing teams to lose money. The union has to take a hit, here.Comment

So if I am understanding this correctly, the league is bumping their revenue offer up 3% to an even 50/50 split, while tossing out all of the new contract rule proposals with the exception of the five year contract max, and one additional year of team control before free agency.

I guess if we still get an 82 game season, Winter Classic and on schedule playoffs then what was all the fuss about for us fans? Just get to the finishing line please.
*Triple post, because that's how we roll in the hockey section.Comment

All I want is the fuckin game back so I can go on my trip to florida in Jan and watch a couple games down there.
This is pretty much the first deal that isn't fully laughable from the NHL and its becoming quite clear owners are starting to pressure bettman into getting a deal done. I lol about him wanting to get a full season in like the fans want. No gary I'm pretty sure the leafs/rangers and habs ownership groups are yelling loudly at you to put a 50/50 deal in place so they can go back to jumping into their money bins every morning.

Pretty much I guess. But what sticks in my craw is the way NHL fans have orgasm'd over this offer to the extent that the players are going to get no credit or backing now. They are still taking a loss on the deal even if they end up 50-50 and minus any new restrictions on free agency. More worryingly to be honest, this doesn't address fundamental issues that the owners refuse to look at i.e the teams that still won't make a profit even with a new, lower cap-ceiling.
The league quite simply is not going to address some of the key issues. We'll lose the entire season or have scab players before the league will concede that it has teams in markets that aren't viable for a hockey team and either move those or contract.Comment

I don't think hockey fans have orgasmed over this because its "the right deal". We just want our fucking hockey back.

The other thing too is fans are seeing 50/50 split and are also seeing how the other leagues agree'd on the same thing and are having high hopes. I'm sure the smaller issues like second contract will start in the 2nd year, 5 year max deals, cap space trading ect ect are the things that are going to have to be hammered out over the next week. At the very minimum this seems to be the most promising offer the NHL has proposed yet. Remember the first offer was an almost 20% reduction in salaries and a roll back. I think the roll back was the biggest gripe back then.

I wonder if anyone has done the math on how much money the league will make in the coming future with all these new deals they are signing with media sources, and how popular the game is starting to become again because of that. Going down rom 57 to 50 isn't bad, and the players will probably see very little in salary reduction because of it. If you look at some of the contracts players sign, they are getting a lot more then what they are worth. All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.

Word is, the players still don't like the deal.
And they also are not happy with the negative reaction the fans are having towards them now. Some tend to think this 50/50 split was a PR move by the NHL to get fans on their side, because no the players are under huge pressure to make a deal happen. All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.
