@TSNBobMcKenzie: Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently fired Brian Burke as general manager. Working on official confirmations.

MLSE ownership changed hands not that long ago. They likely had to go through each of their organizations to evaluate everyone. Perhaps saving the Leafs till later, or simply taking longer, cause of the lockout.

Toronto teams under previous ownership, just needed to make money, ownership had no care about winning cause they are cunts. New ownership needs them to win, cause they are TV broadcasters and want people to watch.

I was just thinking this morning that this lockout may have been the best thing for Burke, because he can get the Leafs into the playoffs and keep his job, since there is no chance the leafs would fire him just as the short season is going to start.

I love how they talk about how Kadri could change his legacy if he becomes a star player. I think keeping Kadri down as long as they did was a mistake and he should have been up a year ago, if not more.

This press conference should be gold.
All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.

The first thing the ownership should of done was get rid of that dick Tom Anselmi. New ownership clearly doesn't care about winning and all they care about is making noise.

Hows TorontoFC been for the past couple years? Anselmi has been behind that mess. They have really wanted to bring in more winners with him at the helm of the hockey side.

Burke got canned because the new suits didn't like Burke and his ways. This was a really stupid move imo.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have replaced general manager Brian Burke with Dave Nonis taking over as the new GM and senior vice president. Burke will remain with the organization as a senior advisor.

"Brian will not have direct authority over hockey operations, however this new role will allow our board and I to continue to benefit from his hockey expertise," MLSE president Tom Anselmi said in a statement. "We want to thank Brian for accepting his new role and staying on with our organization."

MLSE chairman Larry Tanenbaum, who is in New York City for the Board of Governors meetings, said it was "a decision of the board."

It was surprising news to many that after a 113-day lockout, the Maple Leafs would fire Burke now.

"Not very often I'm at a loss for words, but today I am," TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie said of the timing of the firing.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com shared those sentiments.

"For him to be fired before a single game played is nothing short of shocking, especially given his role in the CBA negotiations," said LeBrun.

Guess the Leafs new owners were pissed he did something to compromise them in the negotiations?

Tom Anselmi has made MLSE alot of money with a shitty product. TorontoFC has sucked on the pitch, but has performed incredibly well financially. From their perspective, he's making gains off a shitty team in a league still struggling to make money, so why fire him? He'd never make the team a winner, but he'll make them money regardless. I believe he's the one that's been driving them towards their own TV channels to emulate what's been done in other major markets.

This is why he was moved from being a team president, to overseeing the team presidents. No longer does he have anything to do with any of the team's makeup, that's the president's job of each team. TFC got their new president, who's got an outstanding record in MLS and already cleaned house of all the sad sack fucks Anselmi had in there.

It's foolish to say the new owners don't care about winning though, they bought these teams for TV purposes and they want as many people watching as possible. For that, they need to win. OTPP had no motive for them to win like Bogers does. Bogers didn't spend 1.5 Billion just to own these teams, there's massive money to be made through content services if these teams become championship caliber. If these teams lose, that's bad for their TV stations cause nobody wants to watch losers anymore here. They have no choice but to win to justify the purchase of the teams.

Rumours are he was against the trading for Luongo and that Luongo wouldn't come to Toronto because of him.

Regardless, the problems he was brought in to address, were not addressed in 5 years, they had their reasons to fire him.

I just put everything together about Dave Nonis, makes sense about Luongo. Just an odd time to fire him for not fixing things, but if you factor in Luongo, it makes sense.

Burke wasn't fired because of Luongo. He was fired because the new ownership didn't like him. He was constantly fighting with the media here and was what you could say was the "star" of the team which isn't what the new ownership wants. Internally Burke wouldn't move off his stance of not tanking and trying to win right away. I'd say Burkes biggest fault in any of this was his talent assestment that first year when the Kessel trade happended. That one oversight really cost the team dearly. He's failed to address goaltending concerns for 4 years now which has been the biggest issue with the leafs all along and his unwillingness to fire Ron Wilson early on was an issue too. Saying "hey look at his record over the last 4 years" is honestly not fair considering what he came from to what he's come too. If that massive collapse at the end of last season didn't happen there could of been a different story here but people are more interested in ignoring that and just want to shit on the guy.

I'm still split on this decision honestly. I myself was always confident that when I heard the leafs made a trade that they weren't getting trade raped. Outside of the Kessel deal everything else he's managed to pull in has been pretty good. From Lupul and Gardiner for Beauchemin to the hilarious Calgary trade and then shipping Brett Lebda for Lombardi and Franson. His drafts have even gone well and the old problem of Toronto not having any Ontario kids on it will be changing quite soon as more of the previous picks start to emerge. He's missed a lot of high priced free agents but then again I wouldn't want some of those contracts anyways. It's pretty obvious Burke was gearing up towards Free Agency this year with the possibility of Getzlaf and Perry become UFA's and with just 39mil committed next year the leafs have 22mil in cap space to play with.

My biggest fear is something stupid is going to happen but apparantly Nonis is quite interested in this upcoming years rookies so maybe we will see players like MacArthur and Lombardi traded away for first round picks to teams fighting for the playoffs.
