    Blues extend GM Armstrong

The St. Louis Blues signed general manager Doug Armstrong to a five-year contract extension on Wednesday.

Armstrong won the NHL's General Manager of the Year in 2011-12 after his team finished with a 49-22-11, the second-best record in the Western Conference.

"We are thrilled to have Doug in St. Louis through the 2017-18 season and beyond," said Blues owner Tom Stillman. "He has been instrumental in returning the Blues to the top of the Central Division and was very deserving of the GM of the Year award. His vision in the draft process, and his prowess in the trade and free agent markets have positioned our organization to succeed well into the future."

The 48-year-old exec's contract was set to expire on June 30 but the new deal takes him through to the end of the 2017-18 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"Ken Hitchcock and our coaching staff believe we have constructed the foundation necessary to compete year in and year out and deliver St. Louis its first Stanley Cup, " said Armstrong.

Armstrong has been with the Blues for the past five years, joining the club in 2008. He was named the team's GM in July 2010, after Larry Pleau stepped down. He previously served as GM of the Dallas Stars between 2002 and 2007.

It took Armstrong some time, but the Blues are definitely set to be a contender for the future, great job keeping him around.

Great, now that they have a GM in place for the long-term, maybe they can acquire a goal.
