Teams are all right around half way through their schedules right now so it's a good time to speculate on the overall standings at the end of the season.
Eastern Conference
1. Pittsburgh
2. Boston
I think Pittsburgh and Boston will both be pretty close, but I suspect there's a big acquisition on the way for the Penguins before this trade deadline which will put over the top.
3. Carolina
Best in their division, but if anyone will mount a challenge it's Washington.
4. New York R
Best of the rest; not a complete team but this speaks volumes about the lack of depth in the East.
5. Montreal
6. Toronto
7. Washington
I think these three are the middle of the road teams who will definitely make it in.
8. Ottawa
Decimated by injury, I had these guys pegged to do very well early in the season. Without Spezza and Karlsson they are in a battle of attrition, but their work rate and belief is phenomenal.
9. New Jersey
10. Winnipeg
11. New York I
The ones who compete for the 8th spot.
12. Philadelphia
13. Tampa Bay
14. Buffalo
15. Florida
The worst of the worst.
Playoffs is literally anyone's game. 3-8 seeds are so evenly matched that anything could happen. I think Pittsburgh has the best chance of representing the Conference this year especially if they go out and get another scoring winger.
