ESPN, the self-proclaimed worldwide leader in sports, is once again expanding their portfolio. USA Ultimate announced that they have reached an agreement with ESPN which will give the sport of ultimate frisbee unprecedented coverage.
According to the release on USA Ultimate's official site, ESPN will carry coverage of the sport's most significant events, including the College Championships, the U.S. Open, the National Championships and the inaugural Triple Crown Tour.
Does this announcement mean we are one step closer to the infamous ESPN the Ocho? Maybe, but until then fans of ultimate frisbee will have to be content with the network airing live broadcasts of games on ESPN3 and tape-delayed coverage on ESPNU.
Consider this a win-win situation for both parties involved. USA Ultimate and the sport of ultimate frisbee itself should see a boost now that their games and events will be available to more than 83 million households, while ESPN adds yet another sports feather in their cap. And if ultimate frisbee actually becomes the next big thing somehow, ESPN will have a leg up on everyone else.
