Alain Vigneault to coach New York

Alain Vigneault has an agreement to be the next head coach of the New York Rangers.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports that some minor contract details are still to be finalized on the deal.

Vigneault notified the Dallas Stars on Friday that he was withdrawing himself from consideration for their head coaching position.

Vigneault guided the Canucks to a berth in the 2010-11 Stanley Cup Final, and captured two Presidents trophies and six Northwest Division titles with Vancouver. He was fired on May 22 after the Canucks were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year.

The 52-year-old Vigneault posted a 313-170-57 regular-season record over seven seasons in Vancouver, but only had a 33-32 record in the postseason.
I like the hire and expect New York to step it up under him. I don't think Vancouver's previous failings last 2 years were on him, more so on the forwards (mainly the Sedin's going to shit and Kesler becoming glass-man) not performing to their ability.

I wanted Eakins but Vigneault is a good option too. All things considered, I'm just glad to have avoided the gamble of giving the job to Messier. Sather has done two good things in a row now, so he should retire before he ruins all this goodwill in free agency.

Will be funny to see Tortz get hired of the Canucks and see how they do with each others team.

Should be a good move for him, gets out of the west and into the east. The New York media will love him because he is a very tight lipped coach, doesn't mouth off, doesn't give up details about anything, and walks around everything.
All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.

      "rammer" and "cummings"

The NHL series is a giver, Madden takes the load.

Sounds like he's going to waste the money saved with buying out Richards then

Great move in getting rid of a coach because of his postseason failures and replacing him with possibly the worst postseason coach in recent NHL history.

Depends on what you define as recent. If you're just going to look at the last 2 years and say he's terrible, then I guess so. They got a raw deal having to play #8 LA in 2012, after LA used the trade deadline to turn themselves from a underdog to a championship team overnight thanks to the consistent stupidity of Paul Holmgren. Losing to San Jose this year wasn't particularly bad as they were at best an even matchup. How is losing to teams you aren't better than making him to being the worst?

McLellan's only accomplishment in the last 2 years is beating Vancouver once, and losing to St. Louis and LA. He gets a 2 year extension.
Blysma's only accomplishment in the last 2 years is beating the Islanders once, and losing to Philly and Boston. He gets a 2 year extension.
...? Neither of these guys have won a conference in 5 years, McLellan never.

In addition every coach of the past 7 Stanley Cup Finals remain with the same team still today besides him, but I'm sure this is all excluded from your recent history for the sake of where this troll attempt is going to go.

Vancouver's roster aged and the window closed. No coach is taking that team any further than AV did until they resolve the player issues, he was merely the fall guy.

Thankfully stopped reading at this point, since I could already tell where this trainwreck of a post was headed. Tortorella was fired because of the Rangers' playoff performance the past two years. They replace Tortorella with Vignault, who is the only coach in the NHL who underachieved even more in the postseason than Tortorella in that same time frame.

But yeah, when the #1 seed loses to the #8 seed in the opening round, its always a "raw deal" for that #1 seed to face the #8 seed. Got it. I guess Tortorella didn't get a "raw deal" by having to play the Bruins in the postseason this year.

Good to see the worst sports forum on VSN is alive and kicking...

He underachieves because he lost to teams that are equal or better? A seed is determined by an entire season, the LA kings at the start of the 2011 playoffs were not the same team all season, good job on not reading then commenting. Kind of like how you don't watch, but comment on the games too?

Cool story bro, keep on trollin baby.

So you thought the Rangers were better than the Bruins this postseason? Do you understand when a comparison is made, you should probably examine both things being compared?
