Streit signs four year deal with Flyers

The Flyers have agreed to terms with veteran defenseman Mark Streit on a four-year, $21.5 million deal, a source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

With Philadelphia's salary cap situation, Streit's deal will not become official until the Flyers exercise their two compliance buyouts this summer on Ilya Bryzgalov and Danny Briere, the source said.

The New York Islanders traded Streit to Philadelphia last week, giving the Flyers exclusive negotiating rights with the veteran defenseman before he became an unrestricted free agent in July.

The 35-year-old Bern, Switzerland native, who had six goals and 27 points in 48 regular-season games for the Islanders, is coming off a five-year, $20.5 million contract.

In exchange for Streit, the Flyers sent back a fourth-round draft pick in 2014 and 24-year-old minor-league winger Shane Harper.

Streit's departure from the Islanders also makes it appear imminent that 22-year-old superstar center John Tavares will be named New York's captain before the 2013-14 season.

The FA market is going to have some crazy prices again, and with the buyouts happening, its only going to be worse. Smart teams will stay out of it this year.

The FA market will probably be a bargain basement to be honest. It will be diluted by the buyouts and so many potential buyers are struggling to get their own RFAs and UFAs signed as it is. Holmgren is just the one idiot GM who didn't see the salary cap still written into the CBA.

Remember when Bryz was supposed to be the goaltender the Flyers needed? Nope, I don't either.

I'll bet he ends up solidifying a team in some middle of nowhere city ...

Bryz hasn't been terrible, but he hasn't been good either...I'm not a fan of this move, clearly there's a lot more coming in order to even get under the salary cap. Plus after next year they have to give Giroux,Couturier and Schenn (Brayden) new contracts after next season.

              And then this happened:

Rich Winter, Ilya Bryzgalov's agent has been informed by Paul Holmgren that Bryzgalov will NOT be bought out after Cup Final!

Yeah, but Holmgren also told Jeff Carter's agent that he wasn't going to be traded and a week later sent him to Columbus, so we'll see.

The Flyers have now got almost £27m* on six defencemen, none of whom I would say are standout #1 players. Five of them are actually left handed too. I'm not surprised Bryzgalov isn't an auto cut, because they only have one shit backup behind him on the depth chart and they have other overpaid duds to select.

                  * doesn't include Pronger

                    In case anyone was wondering:

                    Kimmo Timonen D 6,333,333
                    Braydon Coburn D 4,500,000
                    Andrej Meszaros D 4,000,000
                    Luke Schenn D 3,600,000
                    Nicklas Grossmann D 3,500,000

plus whatever the hell Streit is gonna get....Definitely not worth all that money for how bad the overall team defense was last year.
