    Alfredsson signs with Detroit

Reported earlier today that Ottawa is no longer in the mix, between Detroit and Boston. Detroit seems to be the winner.

Daniel Alfredsson is leaving the Ottawa Senators.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the long-time team captain made the Senators aware of his decision on Thursday night while TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie says the expectation is that he'll sign with the Detroit Red Wings.

Last season, Alfredsson scored 10 goals and 16 assists in 47 games.

The native of Gotherburg, Sweden has spent his entire career in the nation's capital, scoring 426 goals and adding 682 assists in 1,178 games.

The 40-year-old veteran was originally selected in the sixth round by the Senators at the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

He can still produce at a good secondary rate, but I would expect a good year from him if gets shifts with Z.

it's sad to see all these early-2000s stars at the end of their primes, ring-chasing now.

      Iggy
      Lecavalier
      Alfredsson
      And More

Controversial. They're in the same division now too. I think Ottawa is a team that's really trending upwards so this might be a huge mistake.

This goes against everything Alfie has ever said.

If I was a Sens fan I would definitely boo him on sight for at least 3 years post-retirement.

Don't know how to feel if we land him. He's a great player but I would rather be signing younger players.

Big mistake leaving for the Wings, especially since they finished with the same amount of points as the Senators each season. Ottawa is definitely on the upswing and I think Detroit is peaked with the roster they have, and adding Alfredsson doesn't make them younger.

Detroit is going to get the chance to witness a home team player being booed constantly at home games when the leafs play there

5.5 mil is hilariously bad btw.

                    Leafs offseason training!

I read only a 3.9 cap hit or something.

Edit: it was a 3.5 base salary. Never mind.

Honestly, I don't see this as a huge deal for the Sens. Lets be honest, the guy is in his last year anyway so all this 'losing leadership' stuff means nothing considering next year they will have to replace his leadership anyway, so basically that point is just a year ahead. So now with him gone, you can bring someone else up and continue to build the team and not have to worry about replacing him next year, when you can just do it now. And they got Bobby Ryan, so they found a good replacement.
All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.

                        "rammer" and "cummings"

The NHL series is a giver, Madden takes the load.
